As the largest economy in Africa, Nigeria has to leapfrog into a cashless economy. I urge Nigerians to embrace the various electronic channels available for banking and financial service transactions in Nigeria.

My team and I at the CBN shall be briefing the Senate on the rationale for the Bank’s latest decision to revisit the cashless policy implementation, which we had to defer several times to prepare ourselves and deepen our payments system infrastructure.

I am glad to note that the newly redesigned N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes have reached the deposit money banks and will be distributed to members of the public who are their customers soon.

I assured the President that things are going well with the currency redesign and the cashless policy we recently reintroduced, having been introduced in 2012.

I was at the country home of H.E. Muhammadu Buhari, in Daura, Katsina State, yesterday, Thursday, December 8, 2022, to brief him on the recent happenings at the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian economy.

My colleagues and I at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) are grateful to President Buhari for his unflinching support to the Bank and the capacity of the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPMC) to deliver the redesigned banknotes.

We, at the CBN, are optimistic that the redesigned currency will help to control inflation, assist with the implementation of Monetary Policy, and help in increasing financial inclusion, as we move towards a more cashless economy.

I urge Nigerians to embrace the new N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes, which will circulate alongside the old banknotes till January 31, 2023.

I commend the staff and Management of NSPMC led by Mr. Ahmed Halilu, for living up to expectations by working tirelessly to actualize Mr. President’s directives to print our currency locally.

The independence of the Central Bank of Nigeria, although codified in the Law, would not have been possible without the full support of President Muhammadu Buhari who has made this policy initiative possible and successful.
