I have created something out of cardboard that should never be made out of cardboard.

Today I ran Gigabit Ethernet through a series of Wago connectors and to my horror it just worked.

My tendency to grab interesting objects, fidget with them and then put them down in obscure, unfindable places is a great value add feature when I'm trying to assemble something.

"huh I've spent more time patching this than it would have taken to fix it. I should probably just fix it".

Incredibly freeing to finally get over a sunk cost dump and make the decision to do things correctly.

Discovered "yes" today and I think it is one of the most beautiful Unix commands. Echos "y" to the terminal so fast you can pin a cpu core at 100%.

One of my favorites is the python-can lib has an unexplained time.sleep(2) when you open a new slcan interface. I think it's a parameter you can adjust now, but it used to be a hard coded value. I was always curious why that driver took so long to start until I looked.

Wow, the thing that "never happens" where you forgot that you put in a sleep somewhere actually happened to me. I was wondering why my CAN bus was so slow! Free 50x speed-up. (I think I did this initially to space things out on my oscope.)

I've probably got another weekend of electrical work and some motor control gremlins to tackle but we're close to getting it running again.

Turns out you can make your assembly 5x more rigid by simply tolerancing your parts better and assembling it correctly.

Also I'm really impressed, all the printed actuator parts seem to still be within "spec". This thing has sat in a case for a few months and I was assuming they'd all crept out of alignment.

I also might have made a sign error and drove it off the rails at 40mph, but we do not talk about that because it survived with practically no damage.

We had to teleop the robot to make sure we didn't outrun the car we filmed from; this thing is zippy. (it's limited pretty low in this clip)
