đź“°@waiwainu on #Myanmar junta's sham elections: "This is not an exit strategy, this is a trap. We need to understand that this will only prolong the violence & the conflict, and the junta's disastrous strategy in the country." #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar

Nearly five years ago, Myanmar's military seized power, plunging the country into a bloody civil war that left the junta internationally isolated. Now, with no end to the conflict in sight, Myanmar...

The Trump administration is trying to evade a mandatory UN human rights review of the United States. This is a clear attempt to evade accountability for the diminishing state of bodily autonomy and other human rights across the United States.

"You, the international community, have all the information you need to act." The world must heed this call from UN High Commissioner for Human Rights @volker_turk, especially at the high-level UN conference on the #Rohingya later this month.
#Myanmar urgently needs support as conflict intensifies. Civilians are bearing the heaviest toll. The int'l community must act: push for de-escalation, aid & accountability — & heed the voices of Myanmar's people calling for peace & civilian rule. My update ⬇️

“Taliban pleaded for intl aid after the earthquake…But money & supplies alone cannot overcome barriers Taliban themselves impose. Aid w/o access perpetuates inequality. Afghanistan needs not only resources, but conditions guaranteeing women receive them.”

Unless the world acts with resolve, every disaster – whether natural or man-made – will continue to claim Afghan women and children first.

This is a devastating example of gender apartheid and its society-wide impacts. When you so severely restrict the lives of half the population, even something as urgent and essential as natural disaster recovery will be compromised.
More than 2,000 people have been killed following a deadly earthquake in Afghanistan. The Taliban have imposed rules that make it difficult for female aid workers to help with rescue efforts. Taliban authorities should ensure that women are involved in all relief work.

Military rule in #Myanmar has always been marked by systemic gender inequality and violence. The international community must not let the junta use sham elections to further cement its regime of patriarchal terror.
My latest for @Myanmar_Now_Eng on how the sham election by the military junta will have disastrous impacts on women and girls, in yet another setback for gender equality in #Burma. https://t.co/3Q3ByLPnRU
