Spare a tear for The Last Dinner Party inés. "Love ya Abi - but girl!!! 100's more of this to go. "So, is the singer this melodramatic in her real life relationships?" "Oh! Noo-ooo!" she replies, her laughter ripe with sarcasm, as her bandmates deliver a hasty "no comment".(BBC)

Absolutely hate TLDP for writing a song as sad as The Scythe, can't listen to it without sobbing

The Last Dinner Party (TLDP) Part 3. Following on from my contention above...Abigail confirmed to Paper Mag that The Scythe included her breakup with Henry Spychalski of HMLTD. "the relationship where 'nothing matters.'" which was about Henry & evidently does still matter.

As for the industry The Last Dinner Party's "live first" strategy originated with HMLTD & Black Midi. They've acknowledged their immediate influences, only media & fans with their own agenda's haven't.

The Last Dinner Party (TLDP) Part 2. "You seem to start at the beginning: “It was a fine autumn afternoon in....” And in reality you have started at the end. It was there, invisible and present, it is the one which gives to words the pomp and value of a beginning.." Nausea.

"Pyre" "Inferno" Dancing around a fire. The Last Dinner Party has been listening to The Doors: "The time to hesitate is through No time to wallow in the mire Try, now we can only lose And our love become a funeral pyre Come on, baby, light my fire" #1 US Billboard Hot 100 1967

TLDP - Caesar cont.. Annie Lennox's suit wearing created a storm, but she had the smash hit "Sweet Dreams" to back it up, she's mesmerising in that video. I don't see much love for her here. "I'm a female but I have a masculine side and I'm not going to negate that part..."

Quoted thread cont: you'll need it for context - HMLTD's "on the TV tonight" chorus etc. TLDP's Caesar always struck me as confused, so I did some research. Why not just chill & vibe to it? Well, even in the first thrill of Last Dinner Party discovery that's the vibe it gave.

@afternoontrains Artistic creation rarely occurs in a vacuum. Inspiration & influences are part of the creative process. Moreover the relationship between Abigail & Henry permeates TLDP's Caesar - previously titled Leningrad. It's his suit she's wearing, & he's her lover in the pre-chorus. 1/

But TLDP's archetypes don't turn so many people on - Nothing Matters excepted, they offer little in redemption or transcendence. The sexual religious subversive - but who considers themselves a Sinner today? People tend more to project their 'sins' onto issues or identities now.

TLDP tap into archetypes DAVID BOWIE, CARL JUNG AND THE UNCONSCIOUS Artist Tony Oursler...affirmed Bowie’s deep and abiding connection to Jung. “David Bowie inhabits Carl Jung’s world of archetypes, reading and speaking of the psychoanalyst with passion” https://t.co/XpsKEKHAZb

TLDP are sanitising & tying neat bows on a guy who was fighting for his psychic survival. They do know better from their own brief experience (ref Abi Burn Alive - Prelude Q&A). World building? "That fucker [Ziggy] would not leave me alone for years...it became very dangerous."

TLDP's Portrait of a Dead Girl ranks 9th of the Prelude tracks on Spotify. Well adrift of Burn Alive in 7th. Back to Meat Loaf - the song was written by Jim Steinman, who turns the tables on the usual rock power dynamic..."

How TLDP's Portait of a Dead Girl could have gone. :) Abi said she got the idea for the song from a Pinterest image of a woman seated on a bed beside a huge wolf. In 1977 Meat Loaf's You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night) began with this spoken intro 🕯️

TLDP's Sinner is a great song with excellent reviews, but 47m streams is low. Note the different Radio 6 Dads inspired audience back then, & the resultant coy "self-acceptance" MSM press release. It took MLOM's baby-steps press release to come closer to coming out mainstream.

That was producer James Ford above saying that Q Prime's backing was even more interesting than TLDP's undoubted talent, so its understandable why other musicians were concerned. TLDP kept their past largely under wraps, this also contributed. Leave a void & people will fill it.

Q prime and Island handled this poorly. In the '50s '60s '70s '80s managers would go out of their way to protect their artists from flack - TLDP were left to the wolves.

Misogyny is a strong element but not the totality. TLDP itself acknowledged they had become a conduit for justified frustrations over systemic inequality. Their management Q Prime didn't help by providing three conflicting versions of how they discovered the band.

I've long thought that TLDP could do with hiring an electric violinist to spice things up. Dovydas & others ignore labels & bands in order to be autonomous. Dovydas has almost 2m y/t followers. If he plays to 5 people in a bar he's actually playing to thousands or millions.

Is The Last Dinner Party out of touch? @islandrecordsuk Here's how to give fans treats between official releases Cost? - peanuts! Dovydas Maščinskas and Mia Asano are improv wizards & this one's also hilarious - Pirate Metal. Aesthetics 10/10. 1.9m y/t views v Sinner 1.5m.
