Most passing TDs in first 6 NFL seasons:
Dan Marino 196
Andrew Luck 171
Peyton Manning 167
Russell Wilson 161
Most passing yards in first 6 NFL seasons:
Peyton Manning 24,885
Dan Marino 23,856
Andrew Luck 23,671
Matt Ryan 23,472
Trevor Lawrence is the best true freshman QB I've ever seen. If I was running an NFL team, I'd be making trades for as many 2021 picks I could get my hands on.
For those still doubting Frank Gore's HOF credentials (are there any of you left?), with 46 rushing yards on Sunday, he will surpass Barry Sanders and move into third place on NFL’s all-time list:
Emmitt Smith 18,335
Walter Payton 16,726
Barry Sanders 15,269
Frank Gore 15,224
I told my Twitter helper I wanted to say something about how I think Mike Leach would be a great candidate for the FSU opening. Told him to be creative. This is what he came up with. Said it was a meam and the kids would understand.
Jalen Suggs, the second cousin of Terrell Suggs, is the only person in Minnesota history to win the state's Mr. Basketball and Mr. Football awards in the same season. He was a four-star, state-championship, duel-threat QB in football and a five-star in basketball.
The phone of former Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury has been ringing off the hook from NFL teams, including two that have given him firm offers. College offense has infiltrated the NFL and Kingsbury's superb knowledge of it is in high demand.
Ron Wolf once said his greatest regret during his tenure in Green Bay was not listening to a young scout pound the table for Terrell Davis during the 1995 draft. That scout was 35-yo John Dorsey. John's always had an eye for talent. What he pulled off today was his opus magnum.
We never cleared the room but sometimes we'd lay traps for scouts we didn't trust. In 1987 we showed our board to a scout with us taking Mike Junkin, a LB we didn't like. Two days later, Cowboys beat writer Jim Dent wrote story saying we were taking Junkin.
Hook, line, stinker.

coach Jon Gruden and GM Mike Mayock sent their scouts home for the weekend and they are not expected to return by draft time. The belief is they don’t know who to trust and wanted to clear the room.
This morning while learning of Dwayne Haskins’ passing, I reacted carelessly and insensitively on a radio interview. I want to apologize to Mr. Haskins’ family and anyone who heard my poor choice of words. I truly apologize. My heart goes out to his family at this difficult time.
15 active NFL players have been killed in action during wartime, 12 during World War II, two in Vietnam and one in Afghanistan. Let us remember them today:
Cpl. MIKE BASCA (Philadelphia Eagles, died in France, 1944)
After observing pft’s obsessiveness with
@AaronRodgers12
, which Sunday night stood at 78 tweets since the Rodgers covid news first broke (not a single one showing concern for the QB’s health), someone got a little sensitive. 😂
On this day in 1989, Jerry Jones purchased the Cowboys for $140 million, a price many thought he had overpaid. Today, the Cowboys franchise is worth an estimated $5.5 billion.
Belichick is so ahead of every coach in the league it's ridiculous. Tell me what coach can do what he's done this year. Loses Brady. Eight players opt out. Brings in new QB. Changes offense. Keeps winning. Unbelievable.
26 years ago today (12/19/1994), 325-lb rookie Larry Allen ran down Saints LB Darion Conner on MNF for one of the most athletic big-man plays in NFL history.
When Jerry called me earlier this week to tell me he was adding me to the Cowboys ROH, I can't tell you how overcome I was with pride and gratitude. And happiness. It was on par with walking off the field after winning the Super Bowl. Thank you all for your heartfelt support.
The Cowboys have had special players at QB throughout the years, from Roger to Troy to Tony to Dak. And they've all been special people, too. Dak not only called to congratulate me on my HOF election on Saturday, he took time to visit me during
#SBLIII
Proud to call him friend.
Can't stop thinking about
@dak
. In life as in football there are good and bad people. Dak is one of the great ones. This is more than a loss of a starting QB; this is a loss of a respected leader of men. This is a loss suffered by the entire NFL.
About this Kyler Murray situation: 1) Only 1 team put him in front of white board. 2) The questions about leadership, study habits run counter to my experience w/ Kyler, who I've known since he was a HS soph. Have known his dad for 30 years. Honestly, it all sounds fabricated.
Have to admit, there were some anxious moments waiting for the knock on the door yesterday. But like my entire life with her, Sara was there to comfort me. I'm so thrilled to have shared this special moment with her. I couldn't have done it without her.

15 years ago today, the great Reggie White passed away at the age of 43. Still as shocking now as it was then. Not sure there was a better pass rusher in the NFL's 100 years. Maybe not even a better defensive player.
One more thing about Antonio Brown: While you’re criticizing him and his awful behavior, don’t forget he’s had enablers at every point along the way. There have been a lot of souls sold. Great to say “he’s no longer a Buc” but he never should have been a Buc.
Last night's
#NYJvsCLE
had 10.3 million viewers in the game's final 6 minutes, and was
@nflnetwork
's highest-rated and most-watched exclusive TNF game in more than three years.
Total viewership for last night’s
#NOvsDAL
game (TV + digital) was 22.2M viewers, the most watched TNF game EVER. They should put me in the ring of honor every week.
Ed Reed was among 1st in
#HoF2019
class to congratulate me. Shortly after, he went to senior nominee Johnny Robinson, a safety who 2x led league in INTs, looked him straight in the eye and thanked him for carving path for players like him. It was so impressive to witness.
DK Metcalf's rundown of Budda Baker last night was one of the greatest hustle plays of all-time, right up there with 325-lb Larry Allen's catch-and-release of Saints LB Darion Conner on MNF in 1994. Interestingly, Al Michaels was on the call both times.
Even though I was lucky enough to have never had to fire a coach in the 29 years I was with the Cowboys, this has always been a very sad day for me. So many great men, tireless workers losing their jobs around the holidays, so many families affected. Keep them in mind today.
Seriously, we're going to blame that loss on Kyle Shanahan? C'mon, man. If you polled the GMs of all 32 teams and asked them who they'd rather have, their current coach or KS, my guess is that no less than 75% would swap without batting an eye. It wasn't the play-calling.
The Cowboys are the first team in NFL history to feature a 4,000-yard passer (Prescott), a 1,000-yard rusher (Elliott), a 1,000-yard receiver (Lamb), a player with 10+ sacks (Parsons) and a player with 10+ interceptions (Diggs).
A nice new twist the NFL is doing this year for players accepting an invite to the draft: Bringing the player's high school coach with them, all expenses paid.
If you question the timing of Andrew Luck's retirement, think about this: He called it quits AFTER the Colts broke training camp. Most players would prefer to skip camp altogether (some even spend it in places like Cabo). Luck gave the game everything he had.
Gardner Minshew's career trajectory:
--> 70th best pro-style QB prospect out of HS
--> NW Miss CC
--> East Carolina transfer
--> WSU grad transfer, Pac-12 OPOY
--> 6th-round pick
--> Rookie starter
Lesson: If you have NFL dreams as QB,
@Coach_Leach
should be on your short list.
Some strange similarities between Alex Smith's injury and Joe Thiesmann's 33 years earlier:
>Same date: Nov. 18
>Same score: 23-21
>Same yards/att: 5.0
>Injured leg: Right
>Injuries: Broken tibia, fibula
>Injured on 3rd sack of game
**Romeo Crennel on sideline for both games
Adam Schefter does amazing job at ESPN. People thought the league handed him scoops when he was at NFL Network. I know for fact that was not the case. He works it harder than anyone else, and develops deep, trusted relationships.That's how you become the best at anything.
Bill Belichick lost his mother last week. I'm sure he has deeper concerns than the outfit he picks out on a zoom call with reporters. Shameless what the talking heads are discussing today.
I'm heartbroken. Sara and I lost our dog this morning after she got hit by a car yesterday. Thanks for the time you gave us, Birdie. We loved every minute of it, and we'll miss you dearly.
Happy 84th birthday John Madden. Most people don't know this but John was quite an athlete. He got a scholarship to Oregon in 1954 to play w/ childhood friend John Robinson. It was there he raced John Landy (world record holder in mile) in a 40, bets were placed ... and he won.
44 years ago today, I traded the 14th overall pick and three second-rounders to the Seahawks for the No. 2 overall pick. Used it to take Pittsburgh RB Tony Dorsett.
The rest is NFL history.
I've always believed the trade I made for Tony Dorsett was one of the greatest trades in NFL history. At the risk of being too reactive the trade Jerry Jones made for Amari Cooper could end up being right up there. I loved it for Dallas when it happened, it looks even better now.
Happy birthday to the finest human I have ever known, Roger Staubach. Thank you for your friendship throughout the years and your contributions to the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL. Enjoy your last year of 70s, it only gets better after that.
Partying maskless in a strip club in a pandemic, putting your team (not to mention your own coach whose immune system was compromised by cancer treatments) at risk, hours after losing a game in which you started at QB. At some point you have to set the bar higher for yourself.
Patriots assistants under Bill Belichick to become head coaches elsewhere:
Brian Flores 5-11
Matt Patricia 9-22-1
Bill O’Brien 54-47
Josh McDaniels 11-17
Eric Mangini 33-48
Romeo Crennel 28-55
Total: 140-200-1 (.412)
Why does it have to be Tom or Bill? Can't we all agree that both were the reasons New England was so good for so long? That both are among the best at their respective jobs in NFL history? This season proves nothing.
I've been around for 86 of the NFL's 100 seasons, an active participant in the last 60, traveling to ballparks & receiving nothing but kindness from fans and members of teams. Borrowing a line from Lou Gehrig, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.

Five years ago today, Byron Jones set a world record in the broad jump at the combine. His jump of 12-3 is still 6 inches better than the second-best mark ever recorded at the combine:
1. Byron Jones 12-3
t2. Emanuel Hall 11-9
t2. Obi Melifonwu 11-9
t2. Juan Thornhill 11-9
Will Hernandez is one of my favorite players in this draft. Unbelievable value at this point. Will be
@saquon
and Eli's best friend. Plug him in for the next decade.
