Students, educators, & parents in FL are desperately in need of change during 2024 Legislative Session (opening today). The Freedom to Learn Act filed in both the Florida House and Senate seeks to correct many of the unnecessary censorship issues caused by past legislation.

Photos of covered shelves in @ecpsfl libraries are raising concerns among parents and citizens. One parent says it’s “incredibly ironic” that organizations such as @Moms4Liberty are touting book removals as “parental choice” since she wasn’t given one. https://t.co/JW4W1o1Ha4

Parents have raised concerns that books are inaccessible in high school libraries as the district reviews materials to be in compliance with Florida's expansion of "Don't Say Gay" law.

What’s NOT in the AA History standards is also important. Educators can have their certification challenged by any parent that believes they “instructed” on topics of racism/discrimination in an age inappropriate way. And “age-appropriate” is defined by what is in the standards.

Let’s chat about the chilling effect on instruction, classroom discussion, and what’s available in the library for self-selection thanks to the rules that were passed yesterday related to standards and principles.

In 1959, police were called to a segregated library when a Black 9-year-old boy trying to check out books refused to leave, after being told the library was not for Black people. The boy, Ronald McNair, went on to became an astronaut. The library is also now named after him.

Censorship is happening in FL. @veronikellymars of Book Riot gave a wonderful explanation of what causes soft and self-censorship last week in her Literary Activism newsletter (you should subscribe), and we wanted to create a visual to expand on her definition.

New info out of Manatee Schools. The list they share online does not tell the whole story of how the restrictions/removals came to be and what’s still to come. You can see their list here: https://t.co/9FRngh5UUP

The OK superintendent of schools says the Tulsa Race Massacre shld be taught without reference to race, or else that would be "CRT". Just the latest effort to pressure educators to peddle warped versions of history that omit, er, critical details. #EdScare

More evidence of the chilling effect of HB1069 - the new law that goes into effect on 7/1/23. @OCPSnews has advised their media specialists doing summer approvals of classroom libraries to immediately reject books for any depiction or description of “sexual conduct.”

Here’s a reminder that a number of FL districts BANNED this book after the Governor mischaracterized it in a March press conference. No review - just took his word for it. Volusia even ignored a committee decision to retain it:
