Mat Isbhia and James Jones spoke to Suns media for over 40 minutes yesterday, which means there was a LOT to digest. I listened, then re-listened, to what they had to say before giving my biggest takeaways:
Kevin Durant on Anthony Edwards trash talking him after making those 3s: “Yeah, it’s just basketball - not even playoffs, it’s just hoop. You get hot, you make shots, you make tough shots, you’re gonna feel excited about yourself. So it’s on me to keep coming back”
Devin Booker on facing Deandre Ayton: “It’s fun….He played extra hard tonight. I seen that, and my challenge for him is to play like that every night.”
Jusuf Nurkic on the Draymond Green incident: "What’s going on with him, I don’t know. Personally, that brother needs help. I’m glad he didn’t try to choke me."
“I’m kind of sick of hearing about everyone shitting on him nonstop.”
I asked Jock Landale about Deandre Ayton offering him words of advice despite being benched late in Game 3, and he went on an all-time rant about DA as a teammate and player:
Deandre Ayton on Chris Paul: "I love CP, man. That's the only guy that's ever pushed me, like big bro PUSHED me...he cares so much, I've never known a guy that cares so much about basketball and competing."
Here's some Suns serotonin to start your day: Devin Booker was asked whether he competes harder against friends like KAT.
Book: "I do it every night. I have smoke with...a lot. Every night."
"The whole league," Kevin Durant chimed in.
Booker: "Yeah, everybody."
[Fin.]
Devin Booker on Suns fans sticking with him: "They've embraced me that way since day 1. I've put me head down and I've worked and I've been through a lot of bullshit honestly...the love has been there since I've been there, even when we were at the bottom. Phoenix is my city."
I asked Kevin Durant about his level of motivation coming off a sweep at this point in his career.
"I live and breathe this shit, bro. At this point in my life, I got a lot of shit going on outside of basketball, but what I’m mainly focused on is ball, bro." (1/2)
Devin Booker on whether the Suns heard what Anthony Davis said before the game: "Yeah."
On whether it motivated them: "Nah. That's what's gonna happen anyways. I just think it's funny."
Chris Paul thanks Suns fans with his own tribute on IG, with some photos of him and Devin Booker, Monty Williams, Mikal Bridges…and Scott Foster 😂
Caption: “Thank you to The Valley for three AMAZING years! My apologies for the early exit tonite…..🤦🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️”
Kevin Durant is Kevin Durant. Full stop.
But it should be nothing but love from the Suns fanbase for Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson, two standup guys who were drafted here, blossomed here and became fan favorites here.
Jae Crowder was asked if the Suns poured water on Devin Booker or anything like that to celebrate the triple-double.
"No, we didn't pour water on him or anything like that. It's Game 1."
“I’m jealous.”
I asked Devin Booker if he had put in a word with Kevin Durant about showing up in Call Of Duty.
“I talk about it every day, he didn’t even bring it up to me! I hit him this morning like, ‘Come on, bro, you didn’t even let me know?’”
Devin Booker's full response to Anthony Davis pregame comments, including this gem: "If 'ifs' were a fifth, we'd all be drunk."
Simply shrugged and laughed when somebody brought up Chris Paul being hurt in last year's playoff series:
Only players/people of Mikal Bridges' and Cam Johnson's caliber could make fans feel a twinge of sadness while trading for Kevin Durant. It'd be a pretty neat story if the Suns won it all this season and were able to give them rings for what they gave this franchise
I don’t think it can be understated how terrible you have to be as a GM to have LeBron James and Anthony Davis as your foundation and STILL not be able to construct even a play-in team around them
Devin Booker said the Nets are one of his starred League Pass teams because of Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson.
“It’s bigger than basketball with them. Everybody here knows they’re high-character, and they left their mark on this organization.”
I, for one, can’t believe the dude who shoved Chris Paul in the back after he got 41 points dropped on his head in a closeout Western Conference Finals game, would go on national TV and say bad things about him! Surely unfiltered truth we’re getting there.
I really hate being the "If Devin Booker did this" guy...but I'm gonna be that guy for a sec, because if that's really all the fan said, if Devin Booker did this, he'd be the No. 1 trend on Twitter immediately
Luka Doncic asked security to eject this Suns fan, who was sitting two rows behind midcourt press row. The comment the fan made that drew Doncic’s wrath: “Luka, you’re tired! Get your ass on the treadmill!”
I'm still digesting how Devin Booker dropped a season-high 47 points and a career-high 8 3-pointers in a closeout playoff game against the defending NBA champions in his first-ever playoff series, hbu?
Cam Johnson said he thought he’d be there for about an hour and 60-100 people would show up. Then he got a text at 2 p.m. that there were about 300 people outside, so he knew they were going to have stay open “past business hours”
I asked Devin Booker about the “rivalry” with Luka Doncic and Luka’s recent comments about respecting Book’s game: “Me and Luka’s respect for each other has been mutual and at a high level since he came into the league.”
For those asking, Chris Paul cannot re-sign with the Suns in the event Washington waives him. The CP3 era in Phoenix is officially over. Cannot say enough about what he did for this organization on and off the court. A no-brainer Ring of Honor guy, even after just 3 seasons
Frank Kaminsky being waived sucks man. He was playing the best basketball of his career before he got hurt. It's cruel he won't be able to contribute on this team during such a magical season. I wish him nothing but the best
Devin Booker on trying to pick up Deandre Ayton after tonight: “Energy and effort always has to be high, especially around this time. You can’t get flustered, you can’t get in your own head, and I could see that with him a little bit tonight, so that’s my job to just pump him up”
“Willie’s the man.”
Devin Booker said Willie Green texted him when he first injured his hamstring, “Even though we’re competing, I hope it heals up quick.”
People are undoubtedly gonna dog Devin Booker for that MVP tweet, but after years of being told his good numbers on bad teams were empty calories, I get it. It’s frustrating he isn’t even considered an All-NBA lock with a 26–5-5 stat line on the No. 1 team (by 9 games!)
Devin Booker was asked about taking that last shot at the buzzer after Zion Williamson's last-second dunk a few games ago. With a straight face, he said:
"Just playing til the end."
“I’ve been saying it for three years now, you find me another elite scorer that plays defense like Book does.” - Monty Williams on Devin Booker not ducking defensive matchups
Monty Williams : "I'm gonna say this: 42 to 15 in free throws." Said you can slice it any way you want it, but in a playoff game that physical, "that's hard to do."
Last night, Devin Booker, Chris Paul and Deandre Ayton became the first Suns trio to record double-doubles in the same playoff game since Steve Nash, Shawn Marion and Amar'e Stoudemire back in 2007
Devin Booker said he looked at Kobe's retired jerseys in the rafters after the game. Said he felt him in the building and thought he would've been proud
Devin Booker said on the Suns postgame show that Monty Williams tried to put him in in the 4th quarter when the Bulls cut it to 18, but Book didn't think it was necessary
Kevin Durant said once he learned Yuta Watanabe was a target for the Suns in free agency, he reached out to help recruit him.
“We hope for big things from him this season, and I love that everybody’s been enjoying the way he’s been playing in practice thus far.”
“You would think with our team being No. 1 in the league, it would be nice to get some representation.”
Chris Paul doesn’t understand how Cam Johnson, who has a higher 3-point percentage than anyone in the 3-Point Contest, didn’t make the field
The accounts sharing that clip of KD listing his top 5 teammates and "forgetting Russ" -- and NOT the clip where he acknowledges he made a mistake and actually includes Russ 2 seconds later -- is just one of many examples of why people don't trust this industry anymore
People say they love NBA rivalries and watching players trash talk, but then Devin Booker talks to an official in front of Luka and it's "LOL talking trash after what happened in Game 7??" Just say you don't like Book, that makes more sense than that hypocrisy
Soooo Devin Booker was named a replacement All-Star, Monty Williams finished 2nd in COY voting and Mikal Bridges missed the All-Defensive team.
Some people really were too late to this Suns bandwagon, huh
Deandre Ayton on people questioning his motor: “Man, I don’t know what that is. Motor? Come on, I play both ends of the floor. My name is Dominayton, I anchor the Phoenix Suns on both ends of the floor. Motor, man? Really? Nope! I run on Tesla battery.”
The NBA's L2M report from last night confirms Keon Johnson should've been called for defense 3 seconds on the Suns' last play, Mikal Bridges did not travel, and Jerami Grant did travel on his game-winner. Yeesh.
