A remarkably distressing letter from a student at my university. I should perhaps note here that within the last week (and for a first time in 22 years in Oxford) I experienced antisemitic hate based on my surname.
@andrewsillett
I don't particularly blame the city - indeed everyone in the position of authority has been excellent. But these things are happening, and need to be taken with seriousness they deserve.

To be clear, I'm not suggesting that city, police, University or colleges have been in any way condoning this. But this has been happening a lot in the past few weeks, and unless one is in the demographic affected, depressingly easy to miss and not to take seriously.

This is a shocking and distressing article. I hope you are keeping safe and that the university authorities crack down on this vile antisemitic behaviour.

I'm actually reasonably sure that where culprits are identifiable, appropriate disciplinary action is being taken. But broader cultural awareness would be good.

Distressing behaviour. They should be taken to task, by the senior authorities. God bless those Jewish students and Israel forever and ever✝️🔯✡️🕎🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱

I don't actually think most of this is a matter for 'senior authorities' - that is usually a recipe for loud but meaningless, in any institution, and with the best of intentions; it's a matter for appropriate authorities at appropriate level being alert to it and taking action.

I am so sorry to read that you’ve experienced anti-semitic abuse. I hope you are OK.
The article poses an important question (the why?) but it’s not obvious to me that the author (for whom my heart goes out) posits any answer.
Do you have any thoughts you could share?

@AudreySuffolk
I don't know that we ever have a full answer to the roots of antisemitism, islamophobia or any other prejudice, unless it be the fallen human nature. There are of course some answers to the current toxic mix, but I fear a twitter answer might prove inadequate to the significance.

I read that piece too, and it's beyond appalling that such fear should be created in Oxford, one of the world's great sites of rational enquiry. And I'm so sorry to hear of your own experience, Georgy.
@GeorgyKantor
I'm really, really sorry to hear of your experience, Georgy. The author's mention of behaviour by 'otherwise educated, empathic peers' is chilling, not least because I've been seeing it too.
@GeorgyKantor
Very sorry to hear this, Georgy. I hope the offenders are disciplined appropriately, in both your case and the student’s, as well as any others.
@GeorgyKantor
It’s so upsetting Georgy. I don’t carry my Jewishness openly, mainly due to using a married name. But I am Jewish by birth and ethnicity and I’m devastated.
