I know Iβve posted loads about this (sorry!) but thereβs nothing quite like the hard copy of something you helped make. Thanks to all contributors!

Hello everyone. After 15.5 years, I will shortly be closing my Twitter account. It's a shame, I've mostly enjoyed using it, but I do not see a path back under the current ownership. I am on bluesky at @georgegilbert.bsky.social . Please drop me a DM if you wish to stay in touch.

Delighted to say I have signed a contract with @RoutledgeHist @routledgebooks for a textbook 'New directions in late imperial Russia' that I will co-write with my amazing colleague Jen Keating. Thanks to the five peer reviewers. Looking forward to getting started- due early 2027.

RT @DPJHodges: People are currently attempting to burn down a hotel housing migrants. This is not a βprotestβ. Itβs racist thuggery on a paβ¦.

As someone who has worked on this in a markedly different context protest politics never draws on uniform support: crowds arenβt homogenous and contain numerous interlocking and sometimes contrasting ideas. Supporters and critics will pick and choose the bits they want to stress.
Any large instance of βcontentious politicsβ (riots, spikey protests, insurrection) will generally draw upon a wide cross-section of people and grievances. Supporters will say itβs ideologically homogenous. Critics will say itβs just criminals & reprobates. Both are wrong 1/4.

Quoting this piece by @irgarner in light of last few days. Russian disinfo has fanned tensions in GB causing riots. It isnβt about sowing confusion/true v. false but rather exploiting existing divisions until society falls apart at the seams. Understanding this is so crucial.
Russian information war isn't about confusing you or obscuring the truth. It's about exploiting divisions in our societies until we destroy each other. The latest round of violence in the UK is another manifestation of that war.

I always enjoy reading intelligent commentary I don't agree with. This piece @LRB @TomFStevenson is half the story - more needs to be done to account for Russia's role.
In the new @LRB, I wrote about Nato, its local converts, and the US strategic position in Europe.
