Further more, wouldn't it have been more effective if they offered you a reward in exchange for not staying up late the previous night? In many cases punishment doesn't reduce the action, but rather reduces the visibility of the action. You're just teaching them to hide it.

Eg when your parents yelled at you or seized your phone because you're using it so late at night. Did you actually stop staying up late with it or just get better at pretending to be asleep when you hear them coming?
