Against Brighton, Henderson took up position to literally cover Salah’s back, so Salah could dedicate his full focus on the penalty kick. One might expect the referee to control these mindgame attempts, but he is only one person and often preoccupied elsewhere. 2/4

Knowledge about success factors is only the beginning to mastering the penalty shootout in practice. Smart teams approach this holistically, transfer the insights to concrete action, and practice with quality. The best teams in 2021 are committed, clever, and clandestine. (13/13)

Jorginho’s penalty miss against West Ham today is another example that GKs have figured out ways to stop what used to be an almost unbeatable GK-dependent technique. GKs are now more knowledgeable, clever & execute w perfect timing How exactly did Fabianski stop Jorginho? 🧵1/4

The perceptual making of De Bruyne's world class assist vs Denmark comes from perfectly timed scans. He scanned 5 times in the 8 seconds prior to receiving the ball. Every time Lukaku touches the ball, de Bruyne looks at the ball. Between every touch, he scans areas off the ball.

Finally, he steps back and is ready to start his run-up. The referee blows his whistle and Mac Allister takes almost 10 seconds (!!!) before he starts moving towards the ball, actively taking deep breaths as he waits. 4/5

Players usually scan when there’s lots of space around them, and less when they’re in tight spaces. This is not the case with De Bruyne who maintains his scan rate even when opponents are close. Makes him effective in those crowded areas where assists & goals are created. 3/10

Positive mind helps! Players who need to score to not instantly lose score 62% of their shots, while 92% of shots where goals instantly give a win are scored. Players also prepare quicker and turn gaze away more on high-stress instantly-lose shots. (5/13)

De Bruyne scans the pitch prior to receiving the ball with a rate of 0.45 scans/second, thus 4-5 scans every 10 seconds. This is high for a player in his role. He constantly exposes his eyes to surrounding information and becomes aware of opportunities & threats early. 2/10

Scanning is as important for defending. In a student project, we found that premier league defenders guarding the box against crosses adopted a more open body orientation and scanned more frequently than reserve league/academy defenders. @NylandN 7/15

Game-based activities where players are required to pick up game-specific information are essential to develop scanning. To get many relevant repetitions, supplement with exercises where scanning is necessary for successful task solution. Video: SC Heerenveen first team. 13/15

When the penalty area is cleared, Mac Allister moves towards the penalty mark, places the ball & takes up a waiting position by the ball – instead of immediately walking back. I like the composed, step-by-step routine, where HE (and not others) decides when he does what. 3/5

Things naturally got more heated as the shootout proceeded. After Weghorst’s goal, a small fight erupted with Martinez over the ball. Dumfries also wanted a word and was on his way over to take part. 7/

Many believe penalties is all about luck. True or not; we found that the more players believe the outcome of penalties are down to chance/lottery the more likely they are to experience destructive anxiety. Perception of control is key. (11/13)

ONE England player did then emerge – Jude Bellingham. A long hug, some words, and when running away, he does so with an urging & energizing body language to the others. Bellingham’s character & instinctual feel for what is right will make him a big future leader for England. 8/

Edwin van der Sar was brilliant at delaying. Keeping his towel by the corner flag, taking forever to get into the goal, forcing the shooter to wait. This way, he indirectly takes the initiative, disrupts the shooter’s rhythm, and forces on him extra seconds of rumination. (7/10)

Going up against Emi Martinez - one of the fiercest, most trash-talking penalty stoppers in the world right now - Man United and Liverpool chose two different ways to protect their penalty taker. Performing under pressure is always a TEAM event.

It’s beautiful to see France approach this last kick as a team, where they basically mark & block out each of their opponents, to give Mbappé space. This is a trend in professional football in 2022 – many teams now view the individual act of a penalty kick as a team event. 8/

(1) Visual distraction technique. Goalkeepers sometimes engage in erratic movements to disturb the visual field of the shooter, command attention, and create disorder. Study shows players are 10% less likely to score when faced with distraction (2/10)

How can you prevent these hostile opponent goalkeeper hand-offs? One way is for your own goalkeeper to hand the ball to the next teammate penalty taker. Noppert figured this out & here hands the ball to de Jong. Too late for the Dutch team though. 8/
