So despite being good at maths, I never felt why base ten was “natural.” Because for me, it wasn’t. It’s such a perfect example of how “common sense” in learning often rests on physical experience—and how that experience isn’t universal.

While reading a computer science book, I found the answer:.👉 We use base ten because humans have ten fingers. It seems obvious. But here’s the twist: I’ve never counted on my fingers. As someone with a physical disability, finger-counting just wasn’t how I learned numbers.

Let’s rethink what “intuitive learning” really means. Because there are many ways to reach understanding—and every one of them counts .#ComputerScience #STEMinclusion #Neurodiversity.

Disabled learners don’t lack intuition. We just build it differently. And that different perspective? It’s not a limitation—it’s a strength.

A small revelation this morning made me laugh—and got me thinking deeply about how we learn maths. I’ve always wondered: why do we use base ten in maths? Wouldn’t a base like eight be more efficient? It has more factors, after all! .#DisabilityInSTEM #AccessibleEducation #Maths.

What happens when frontier models rewrite the “truth” based on the values of a few labs? As Musk recently suggested: “We will use Grok 3.5. to rewrite the entire corpus of human knowledge.”.This is more than a technical question. It’s a societal one. #AIethics #AIalignment.

Who decides truth as AI becomes the default interface to knowledge?. A handful of labs now train frontier models — curating data, values & outputs. These aren’t neutral tools. They shape what we see, believe, and trust. We need transparency, diversity & ethical AI.

Felicity Hammond’s “V3: Model Collapse” draws striking parallels between geological mining and data mining—asking what happens when AI-generated images are reinserted into it. How does the machine interpret this feedback loop? And can it be corrupted by its own outputs?.

Exploring art, AI, and materiality at The Photographers’ Gallery. Also: a wonderfully tautological image of me taking an artsy photo inside the gallery. Obviously. #AIArt #Photography #DigitalFutures #ArtAndTechnology #MachineLearning #FelicityHammond #ThePhotographersGallery

Imagine my surprise when Perplexity AI cited my very own talk at the Royal Institution on the anatomy of a particle detector I gave last year. When you've been cited by an AI, you know you've made it, right?.

Today, I was finishing up preparing the session on AI research tools for my new course, explaining how to best use AI at work. I posed an example question to several AI tools."Explain how all particles are detected within the particle detector ATLAS at CERN with sources"

Inclusion should be about belonging, not just identity. Too often, we close down space for reflection & disagreement in the name of safety. But real inclusion means making room for honest conversation—even when we don’t all agree. #inclusion #belonging #diversity #culturechange.
