Apart from Salman Rushdie there would seem to be no writer today who has the trans-literary stature of the kind that in their time Norman Mailer, Bill Styron, Ralph Ellison & Edward Albee had; being invited to meet “political leaders” seems a rarity now.

How a book began. In a faculty meeting in 1996 I doodled this first step toward Dark Eyes on America: The Novels of Joyce Carol Oates (LSU Press 2005). Perusing her papers at @SyracuseU in 1997 I discovered that @JoyceCarolOates is a prolific doodler, mostly of faces.
