June 2023 shows bare sand and scattered dune vegetation.

The St Nicholas Saturday Market continues tomorrow with a new look.
To allow for improved social distancing, we will now have all hot food traders operating in the car park of St Patrick's School and cold food traders operating around the church.

GCC is today commencing the installation of two parklets in Middle St and Dominic St Lower. Landscaping with biodiversity-friendly planting and cycle parking will follow soon. The parklets will be open and ready for relaxing, parking bikes and smelling the flowers in early April.
In recognition of her achievements and immense impact on the culture and arts community in Galway City, Mayor of Galway City, Cllr. Mike Cubbard presented the Mayor's Choice for the 2020 lifetime achievement award to Mary Coughlan outside the Town Hall Theatre today.
At the request of the Gardaí, the Blackrock Bathing Area including the Diving Tower and the walkway to the rear of the Golf Course are closed until further notice with immediate effect because of physical distancing and disease control concerns.

Another key milestone has been achieved on the construction of the Salmon Weir Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge with the reopening yesterday of the Newtownsmith Road, with a new stone paved surface making it more appeasing to pedestrians and improving the public realm.
Galway City Council wish to thank all the market traders and the general public for their co-operation today with the market operation and in particular with social distancing. While the one way system took a bit of getting used to, it worked extremely well. (1/2)

Browne Doorway has been given a facelift!
2 weeks ago the doorway was treated with specialist dirt/algae remover for historic structures and carefully steam cleaned. The perplex has been replaced & information panels installed. New lighting will be installed in the coming weeks.

Did you know that car traffic used to drive through the pedestrian centre of Galway City? This image, from the Galway Corporation Annual Report 1998, shows traffic at Christmas on Shop Street. Over 257,000 pedestrians walked the same streets in one week in December 2021.

A Mayoral Reception was held on the 18 July to celebrate the historic achievement of Galway Minor Football Team on winning the All-Ireland Championship on 8 July 2022. Mayor of Galway City Councillor Clodagh Higgins acknowledged the outstanding sporting achievements of the team.
Over the past two nights, the frame of a new walkway has been installed on the south side of Wolfe Tone Bridge.
When finished, this new segregated walkway will allow for a safer and more comfortable walking environment for pedestrians.
Works to complete the project are ongoing.
We’ve had calls this morning from members of the public wanting to thank GCC staff for their great work in cleaning up the streets after Ladies Day on Thursday.
