Personal Account. She/Her. Pima County Recorder, elected official, xennial, voting, culture, 21st Century, Native things & dismantling white supremacy. O’odham.
The best day ever with me and my crew. There’s a lot of heartbreaking Anti-Native news rn, but remember to celebrate Indigenous joy too. You can read the story behind the
#IndigenousWomanComingThrough
video and order stickers here:
In case you’re not following Native news, a hotel owner in South Dakota banned Native Americans from staying at her hotel last week, as in, March 2022, the 21st Century. She said she couldn’t tell the “nice ones from the bad ones.” This was the community’s response.
Rewatched the LOTR trilogy recently and my kid casually says, “this is the only scene where 2 women speak to each other in the whole trilogy.” The exchange? A little girl says to Eowyn, “Where’s Mama?!” Eowyn shushes her. “Shh!” End scene. Ouch. It also never occurred to me that
Pumpkins are Indigenous to The Americas. They are literally the food of my people. I don’t wanna hear any more dissing of pumpkin season: pumpkin pies, pumpkin blizzards or pumpkin spice lattes. Pumpkin is sacrit, it’s tradish. Pumpkin haters are basic, not the other way around.
I’m a Native American elected official in AZ who writes about voting, being a xennial elected, Native things, the power of representation, systems of oppression, education, labor, anti-Native racism and I openly talk about white Supremacy.
Can you help me get to 10K?
Arwen wasn’t a part of the counsel of Elrond, even though she literally tracked Strider’s group down, AND outrode 8 Nazgûl riders to save Frodo! AND I noticed in this rewatch that Legolas arrived in Rivendale with other Elven women! They also weren’t invited to the counsel!
The misogyny extends even to the Ents! Treebeard casually mentions that all the Ent-Wives were lost and he doesn’t remember what they actually look like. Bruhhhhh.
(And yes, I still love the trilogy, but some things are hard to unsee.)
Of course, that all-male council meeting is where the Fellowship is formed. They sent out for representatives from all over Middle Earth, Galadriel is a ring bearer- didn’t include her.
This morning I spoke with a reporter who asked why Deb Haaland's confirmation was so significant. "Because we won't have to try to convince her that Native Americans are human beings, that we're still here or that we deserve basic human rights and things like clean water.
This thread is cracking me up. I’m an elected official that oversees Voter Reg & Early Voting in AZ. I post a lot about the voting process, 21st Century Native things(I’m Tohono O’odham) and pop culture, mostly sci-if/fantasy. It’s hilarious that THIS post is what goes viral.
It was awesome to hear
@VP
Kamala Harris speak about issues and investments in Indian Country today. Thank you,
@GRIC_Official
for hosting us! She touched on the importance of voting and the barriers that Native Americans face when participating in our democracy. VP on The Rez.
I support a pregnant person’s right to choose an abortion or not. It’s a medical procedure that should be discussed between a doctor & the pregnant person. Rich people will always have access to abortions. Banning abortions overwhelmingly impacts the poor.
#AbortionRights
Had convo with reporter after tweet about the name of my Tribe: Tohono O’odham, versus previously used “Papago”. He wanted to know why it makes a difference. I was surprised that their colleagues argued it wasn’t a big deal cause the name is still in use in the Phoenix area. 1/3
You’re not entitled to the limited resources of Native communities. Unless you’re a tribal leader who is talking about the feasibility of Abortion Clinics on reservation lands, please just stop. I’m tired of reading your Twitter hot takes about how Natives can save the day.
He wore a kilt. I wore a traditional dress. The laces for his shoes were so intricate they came with instructions. I was barefoot. We had an O’odham ñe’i, a bagpiper, birria and a kransekake. 15 yrs of marriage, 23 as a couple. Lots of work, but ridiculously in love. Perfect day.
In honor of this post blowing up, I got myself a pumpkin empanada from La Estrella, the BEST pandería in Tucson. I really went there for Tamales, but the location I went to only has tamales on the weekend. 😩
Got called ugly on Twitter. They didn’t comment on my compassion, ability to listen, intelligence, drive, work ethic, practicality, artistic skills or humor tho, so I’m good. Never included my smokin’ hot appearance on a letter of interest anyway. Not even my best feature.
Tohono O’odham, Desert People, exist. If you live in the PHX, Tucson, Ajo or Nogales, all of that is O’odham land. Maybe you’re just now noticing us. But we’re still here. We’ve always been here and we’ll continue to be here.
I will not be taking questions at this time. 13/13
Thanks for the support. I’ve been too busy to read comments. My campaign assistant is monitoring my accounts and blocking trolls. Please don’t engage. I’m not sweatin’ it cause we’re following the law. Our goal is to finish up the bulk of signature verification by Saturday.
Just cancelled my attendance at an upcoming conference in Arizona because we called to ask about their Covid-19 safety protocols and the organizer was confused what we were asking. “People can wear masks if they want…I guess.” Yo, we’re still in the middle of a global pandemic!
I am an elected countywide official AND I'm a member of the Tohono O'odham Nation.
I am NOT an elected official for my tribe. I'm mainstream, sucka. Some of y'all can't imagine Natives off the reservation, but you're on Native land. We're running things.
#NativeElected
We did it! Last night, we made history! With your support, we won the election with 60% of the vote in Pima County. We could not have done this without you!
Hear I’m being called out for a “lack of transparency.” Broooo…literally did a press conference yesterday. Another at 4 today. Why taking so long? 44K ppl dropped off ballots on Election Day in Pima County. Link to our turnovers I literally have receipts.
Ps. My kid is 21. We were literally watching the shh scene. I was surprised, tho guess shouldn’t have been. Kid says there’s a million memes about it. Yes, now remember the girl talking to her mom about the horse as she sends her kids to Rohan to raise the alarm. I still ❤️ LOTR.
Learn your traditional language. You never know when you’re gonna need it. My mom, who is bilingual in O’odham and English is running a fever after a surgery. She is responding to all questions in O’odham only. I don’t even think she realizes she’s doing it.
Lily Gladstone is a Native American. Not only does that mean she was born in the United States, it also means that she is a member of a federally recognized tribe (Blackfeet and Nez Pierce) and has a documented connection to a tribe. It is a legal political designation.
Hearing
@Lawrence
O’Donnell say my name on MSNBC as he quoted me from
@ezraklein
’s OpEd is def the opposite of “things will die down after the election” which I’ve been expecting since I won. I made history by being the 1st Native American to hold a countywide seat in Pima 1/5
It makes me angry when people argue about name changes. It doesn’t matter to you. It matters to us. Our name has meaning, power. and we carry it with pride. Not recognizing our traditional name erases us. It’s easy to pass policies that hurt us if you think we’re extinct 11/13
My team will be done with 99% of all sig verification on 11/12. The rest will be processed in 3 different ways in accordance with the law:
1. Conditional Provisionals: there are 70 voters who showed up to the polls without ID. They have until 11/16, 5pm to resolve.
From now on, any time someone asks me an election-denying, conspiracy theory based question, I’m gonna say, “Let me look it up for you in the Arizona Constitution and Revised Statutes Election Law book.” along with this photo. Thanks SOS Team! I dig it. 😘
I’m not a historian, not all Natives are. But I do know how to use Google. Much of the following is common knowledge in my community. Most importantly, Tohono O’odham is our traditional name. It what our people have always called ourselves. Papago is what others called us. 2/13
Papago was an assigned name. It was given to us. It’s said to mean, “The Bean Eaters.” Considering that our tribe has existed since time immemorial, the 49 years we officially used it was relatively short. We still ALWAYS called ourselves Tohono O’odham: Desert People. 3/13
1. I’ve been quiet about the recent white supremacy being directed at me as an Indigenous elected official. I know talking about it will make ME vulnerable and I may lose support. It’s cool. I’m not scared, it’s just angering and exhausting to have to continuously explain it.
I was invited to participate in a White House listening session with other government officials to discuss best practices for engaging Tribal communities in voting. 1. I was really struck by how many Natives are working under our current administration.
Holidays are weird and sometimes they can be isolating. This is just a reminder that you are enough, you’re wonderful, you’re unique and you’re needed. I hope you have a wonderful day and you treat yourself well because you’re awesome.
What I should’ve said is Sinema’s extreme failure is an affront to all voters, but especially to Black, Indigenous & People of Color whose rights have only been protected since the 1965 Voting Rights Act. My late grandma still had to wait till mid 70’s for language protections.
.
@GabriellaCKelly
, Recorder for Pima Co. Arizona and Pima’s first Native American elected to countywide office, says Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s filibuster vote which blocked voting rights legislation “was an extreme failure.”
REMINDER: If you come to my office and ask to powwow with me, you will be loudly reminded that Powwows are actual events that involve traditional wear, music, dancing, competitions, prizes, prayer & food. What you're asking for is just called a meeting. It's a meeting. To meet.
.
@SecDebHaaland
today took steps to remove the word “squaw” from the federal vernacular and established a process to review and replace derogatory names from federal lands.
Somewhere along the line, enough people must’ve said, “Hey, why do we let others call us Papago? We’re Tohono O’odham.” And we must have had fancy lawyers by then because we were able to reclaim the name that we had ALWAYS used. It was changed to Tohono O’odham in 1986. 6/13

If you interact with white supremacists on twitter, it shows up in everybody's feed. Their name, their image, their message, pollutes my feed and the feed of EVERYONE who follows you. You aren't dissing them. You're spreading their message. You're amplifying them. Cut it out.
Warning: Death/Grief
A friend of mine who was too scared to get the vaccine, died from Covid-19 on Wednesday. She was fluent in O’odham, which is rare for someone our age. She could even read and write O’odham, which is even more rare. 1/6
The Yoeme were assigned the name Pascua Yaqui. The Kwatsan were assigned Quechuan. The Diné are now known as Navajo. Sometimes people use these terms interchangeably, it’s up to them. They carry their family’s history and their communities, they can use what they want. 9/13
“Papago” was written on maps, documents, slapped on schools. We used it ourselves too. But it didn’t really mean anything to us. It was someone else’s language, someone else’s meaning. We still called ourselves Tohono O’odham: Desert People in our own language. 5/13
You might still hear O’odham using Papago. There’s a badass waila band called Papago Warrior and there’s “The Papago Cafe” on The Rez, which everyone just calls The Cafe. Unless you’ve ever had Papago slung at you like a slur, you have no say. It’s not up to you. 12/13
The producer for
@TheLastWord
with
@Lawrence
calls. “Are you available to be on the show tonight?” ::me making microwave nachos:: “I’m really busy right now.”
Chill. I’m kidding. Tonight (Tuesday), somewhere in the 8 o’ clock hour, Mountain Standard. I have no other details. 😘
When I hear people use it I know that they haven’t spent enough time in our communities. It signals to me that they probably learned about us from books written ABOUT us, but they haven’t taken the time to learn directly FROM us. This isn’t a unique story, its rampant. 8/13
I guess there’s a “Papago Park”. And a “Papago Shopping Center”. I’ve seen “Papago beer” made by non-Natives. That one is particularly painful as I’ve had to fight against the stereotype that Native Americans are predisposed to alcoholism, all my life. 10/13
In the late 1800’s/early 1900’s our Tribe was allocated reservation land. In other words, our lands were stolen. In 1937, we adopted our first constitution as The Papago Tribe. That meant that despite our previous existence, the U.S. Government could finally “recognize” us. 4/13
The 19th Amendment passed in 1920, allowed for white women to vote. Native Americans weren't considered United States citizens until 1924. AZ Natives wouldn't get the right to register to vote until 1948, after suing. They didn't GIVE it to us, we had to FIGHT for it.
Content warning: expletives and transphobia.
The O’odham language is oral and based on context. Speech inflections are important. My dialect can be described as sing-songy. Pronouns are based on context. My mom, whose 1st language is O’odham uses he and she interchangeably.
We met
@AOC

@AndresCanoAZ
@hamilton4house
, AOC and I talked about AZ’s vote by mail system, the AZ legislature, realities of being a working class candidate, how society expects poor people to be ashamed for living, I told her about
@Indivisible_TO
and the border wall 1/3
The Reality of Being a Working-Class Candidate.
Throughout my campaign, I have been very frank and honest about the challenges I face as a working class, non-traditional candidate of color.
I made a quick video explaining how to pronounce Tohono O’odham: We’re you saying it right? Can you inform the rest of Arizona? Thanks. 😘 You’re the best!
My husband has Indigenous Peoples' Day off. I'll be working and our kids have class. Our kid,"Wait...So the only non-Indigenous person in this household has Indigenous Peoples' Day off?!" Lol Smh. Next year, I'm taking it off.
#IndigenousPeoplesDay
#NotAFederalHolidayYet
It’s written using the O’odham alphabet, which is why you likely don’t know how to say it. “Papago” has lingered on in the community too, but mostly old timers say it. Anytime I hear it from a non-O’odham, I roll my eyes and try to avoid the conversation. I don’t like it. 7/13
If you have the privilege of travel, you can directly support Black, Indigenous, People of Color/working folx by leaving a daily tip in your hotel room for housekeeping. A daily tip is best so it goes to the person actually cleaning your room. A note makes it clear.
This means that any Pima County registered voter can vote at any Vote Center in Pima County on Election Day! No more being told you're in the wrong location and being sent to a second location. This means more people participating in our democracy and more ballots being counted!
Pima County Board of Supervisors approve vote centers and e-poll books for the August primary and November general election. Vote was 4-1. Steve Christy was opposed.
@KVOA
I keep seeing tweets from people who don’t appear to be invested in Native communities, or have any type of connection or affiliations, wondering out loud if we can utilize Sovereignty claims to host Abortion clinics on reservations. I also saw that rhetoric regarding asylum.
Anti-Native culture is so ingrained in American culture that u prob didn’t notice it in The Shining. They explicitly say hotel is built on an “old Indian burial ground” :rolls eyes: which perpetuates idea that Natives are dangerous, even in death. We’re the Indian problem. 1/10
I don’t give trolls a platform. I don’t tolerate obscenity, name calling, death threats, fat shaming, sexism, racism, classism, misogyny, homophobia or white supremacy. I don’t justify or argue, I just block. If you’re just obnoxious, I’ll probably just ignore you. No promises.
An an Indigenous person, it can sometimes be hard to go to museums. Not only are the microagressions thick, the number of strangers who violate my personal space high, the absence of names attributed to Native art, art OF Natives made by non-Native people…bruh…I need a nap.
Before I went to work today I submitted my signatures to qualify for the ballot! My filing office is the Pima County Elections Department. As a Democrat running for a countywide seat, I needed a minimum of 1,111 signatures. This cycle local candidates were able to use the
Heard my Twitter was a topic of discussion at a public meeting today. So glad to hear people are putting energy into the dismantling of White Supremacy and systemic oppression. Wait…no, [checks notes] they said I’M racist…for talking about White Supremacy while Indigenous…
Y’all are cracking me up. 😘 It made for a really big laugh. This plus the weirdly named, “Navajo Peach Crisp” which ISN’T a thing, are enough that a letter will be sent. Natives have a good sense of humor… but we’re putting people in check.
Went to pay mortgage, but the amount was weirdly less than usual. Called. For 9 years we paid an additional 131.93 per month for mortgage insurance, required because we had a HUD RISK-BASED loan. No longer have to pay it. So our monthly payment went down.

Demanding to know what Natives do with the money our casinos generate is paternalistic and rooted in white supremacy. Why does that matter to you? Do you think the government has squared up on the attempted genocide, theft of land, water, banning of culture, language & religion?
We won!! Thank you for the love & support! The week of voting was the same week we finalized the restoration of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe’s Early Voting Site! The historical impact of what my win means to the Native Vote, our community and our county is already evident. I’m honored.
We are thrilled to announce that Pima, AZ County Recorder
@GabriellaCKelly
has won our “I AM History” Award!
Since her historic election, Gabriella has fought to make elections more accessible and transparent across her community.
Congrats Gabriella!!
Roe v Wade was overturned. Religious extremism and misogyny are literally going to impact your right to healthcare. Not only are safe abortions now illegal in some states, but birth control in general is now also threatened in EVERY state. I feel like screaming.
The Dr came in, said hello. He interrupted her hello response to ask if she spoke English. Interrupted her again to ask in Spanish. My mom, unimpressed, paused and bitingly responded with, “I speak in MY language, O’odham. English is my 3rd language AND I’ve been to college.” 1/3
Traveling with a group of Natives gets a lot of attention. When my friends & I went to lobby in DC 2 yrs ago, we had people openly staring at us in the airport/metro/sidewalks. To be silly, I kept saying things like, “Excuse me, we’re Indigenous, this is our land, we’re VIP.” 1/9
I’m disappointed with every AZ State Legislator who just voted YES on SB 1485, the PEVL Purge Bill. This bill doesn’t make voting more accessible, doesn’t enhance security & doesn’t support Recorders’ offices. This bill is confusing to voters & hurts tribal/rural voters most.
Reminder: if you have the privilege of travel, don’t forget to tip housekeeping. It’s a physically demanding job often held by hardworking Black, Latinx or Indigenous women. I leave a small amount each day so it goes directly to person who actually cleans my room. More if messy.
Content warning: what I’m about to say will make you uncomfortable.
Part of the everyday, unconscious white supremacy I often deal with is 1. The undervaluing of my time 2. The demand I personally educate
Sometimes I provocatively say, “I refuse to be your Indian tour guide.”
First of all, how dare no one call me to tell me MY AUNTIE DEB HAALAND WAS JUST APPOINTED AS THE SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR!!
@DebHaalandNM
we are SO proud of you! We’re SO EXCITED!! ::SCREAMS::
I use the term Xennial a lot. It’s a term for the microgeneration between Gen-X & Millenial. I grew up w/ out a phone, mailing letters, renting VHS tapes AND also the VCR. But in my teens/early adulthood we got the internet, AOL, cell phones. Analog childhood/Digital adulthood.
According to
@BlogForArizona
, this is what the GOP wants our congressional district to look like. Lol… could they send a stronger message that they don’t want communities of color to participate in their elections? May as well make that the talking point.
#Gerrymandering
Presented to an all Native class of about 50 kids. Told them how my grandma wasn’t allowed to vote until 30. Told them how she didn’t have a right to a translator until 1975. “How many of your grandmas speak your traditional language?” Almost all hands went up.
