Today I got my top ranked job for core surgical training in the North East with an ENT theme. There are so many people that I’m truly grateful for from family to friends to mentors. You’ll all have such a special place in my heart. Part of this accomplishment truly belongs to you

This year my compulsory costs of being a doctor: £48 - medical defence union £166 - licence to practice £260 - online portfolio £578 - examination £650 and £750 - course fees I believe these strikes are to save our profession because, in my opinion, this is unsustainable.

Surgical Courses for Core Surgical Training: 🧵   The self-assessment scoring guidance for candidates 2022 requires candidate to complete 4 surgical courses to access max points which can be expensive. I have compiled a list of accessible courses when I was searching for myself.

Recorded all my bleeps on Friday - I was disappointed as I felt it was a quiet shift and not representative of an on call. Turns out I still received over 60 bleeps throughout a 12.5 h shift - that’s a bleep approximately every 12 minutes… on a “quiet” shift.

Finished Fountaion Year training on an incredible high in ENT surgery. Grateful to everyone who has inspired, taught and encouraged me throughout. Tomorrow I start Core Surgical training! I’m so excited to train within surgery and start tailoring my training further.

Don’t need to score top in the UCAT abstract reasoning to identify this pattern Can we really be calling these pressures “unprecedented”? Training programmes are now service provision in disguise

I asked >100 Foundation Year (FY) doctors about their experience of surgery during the Foundation Programme (FP). The FP is a training programme intended to bridge the gap between university and specialty training. But are we "training" our FY doctors?

I’ve requested AL 12 weeks in advance for a standard day and it has been rejected as it drops the ward below minimum. Does anyone else’s trust have the policy that the doctor is required to arrange cross cover for Annual Leave?

Finished my colorectal rotation feeling grateful for being apart of a great team with multiple surgical opportunities. The final operation count totalled 64! Time to trade in scrubs for actual clothes as I move onto GP - the 1L coffee mug will remain a constant accessory no doubt

During my career, I've always drawn when I have felt inspired. I’ve used art as an artistic outlet, as an educational aid, as a celebratory gift and as memorial art. I cannot wait to share my prints!

My frustration lies in that: A) the hospital is rostered on minimum staffing three months in advance in the absence of trainee leave. B) the cross cover is available however, I’m not being facilitated to organise it. C) the requests to see the policy have been ignored.

The aim of the survey was to collect data on experience of surgery in the foundation programme - looking at positives / negatives and suggest improvements to training. Please share and fill out the survey. I will share more results in time! Thank you in advance.

@criticalgassing My contract says “You shall normally provide a minimum six weeks’ notice of AL to be approved in accordance with local policies and procedures.” They are arguing that it is local policy that if below minimum, it is the doctor’s responsibility to arrange cross cover for AL

Also to note, societies can run surgical courses and apply for accreditation (CPD points). As part of @NorthEastFtss , we ran a surgical skills course accredited by the RCSEd (6 CPD) points. This was kindly funded by a sponsor. Therefore free for deligates!

For foundation year 1 doctors currently being paid £13.81 / h; a mandatory GMC fee of £161 to apply for full registration is extremely costly. That roughly equates to me working 2 standard days for free.

This weekend on call, I was referred to as a “girl” in front of patients by one of the male surgical consultants. I’m a trained individual and should be addressed as either my name or profession. Not reduced to my age and sex.

In January 2018: 54% of foundation trainees in surgery were women; 41% of core surgical training were women; 30% of higher specialty surgical training were women, and 12% of consultant surgeons were women. We are not doing enough to equalise gender inequalities in the NHS.

@scullingmonkey @Jenny_Pewsey Generally all teaching is useful - from bedside to classroom. I received teaching last week on ward round and felt elated that I was taught and invested in. Upon reflection, I was deeply saddened that this was personally noted as it went against the status quo.
