Breaking News: Hate speech on Twitter has jumped since Elon Musk took over, researchers found. Musk “sent up the Bat Signal to every kind of racist, misogynist and homophobe that Twitter was open for business,” the head of one of the research groups said. https://t.co/G7G2oZ89BB

Elon Musk's Twitter just suspended the account of antifascist researcher @chadloder likely to suppress reporting on right-wing extremists. As I reported, Loder's painstaking research identifying a Proud Boy who attacked police on Jan 6 was cited by the DOJ https://t.co/TagSTpsNkT

Lovely new paper by @Jasmine_Hardie and @ChrisCooney101 on brain size evolution in birds, finding that brains are linked to developmental mode, foraging niche, and social bonding / territoriality (but not in support of the Social Brain Hypothesis) https://t.co/LeEzXpZU0G

NEWS: A Trump-appointed federal judge has struck down Biden's student loan forgiveness program. As The Intercept's @kenklippenstein reports, one of the two plaintiffs in the case is a small business owner who had a PPP loan worth $48,000 forgiven in 2022.

Every week I can't fathom how #Andor could get better and this week Stellan Skarsgård delivers an all time top shelf monologue to close. It has the best writing in any Star Wars movie or show, and it carries on the tradition of Rogue One where there are actual consequences. 10/10

Academia is a job. Grad students are doing a job. An egregious lack of self awareness for a Yale professor making six figures plus to say that academia is a "calling". If that's the case they would only accept a salary to cover the most modest living expenses. And yet.
Graduate students are primarily students and trainees, not ordinary workers. Academia is a calling. I suspect unionization will tip the balance so faculty prefer, at the margin, to hire post-docs to do research in their labs rather than students.

I am proud to share this paper with you all, published today. The results are quite surprising: in females, #ornaments have equal potential to be #adaptive by acting as honest signals as in males, regardless of their tendency for reduced elaboration.... https://t.co/E96ypFr4bH
