Q: What does good tech look like? @minibego tech is a means towards an end, it's a tool (not inherently good or bad). It's people we should convince not to do harm (this includes power imbalances & ecological considerations). Open source as a way forward! #GITT2024.

@krob Different people have different levels of agency, important that people act from their level of agency (the not so glamourous work is equally important). From the tech perspective: more open systems, people can shape tech more than in the past #GITT2024.

@PauManzur1 Actually had the same question. 1) As a client; show that it is a problem by collecting data & examples; 2) As a provider: offer quality checks/assurance for non-inclusive language to support translators; e.g. in XTM, but not (yet?) in other tools #GITT2024.

(for the record, @HelenaMoniz5 had to catch a flight, we are not actively silencing her for these next questions 😉 #GITT2024 Thank you for being on the panel, it was brilliant! ❤️).

@minibego "more freedom for others is more freedom for you" is the basic argument in inclusiveness advocacy. #GITT2024.

@PauManzur1 This is an open question, "no solution will please everyone" cf. CSA Research report on inclusive language (2022). Education is important (both ourselves and others), still trying to make people understand why this matters. #GITT2024.

@krob Translation is crucial for this, finding shared common causes in different audiences to create effective communication. Also good: no one group should be in charge of deciding for everyone. Minimal harm + maximal doing good = very very hard #GITT2024.

Q3 from Danielle Saunders (audience): "How do we convince people this is something worth working on, if many people don't think this is important?" Both within companies & user groups (thinking this is #wokeism) #GITT2024.

@krob Personal: more nonbinary people in my life. Professional: machine learning often about classification, generative systems have blown open the scope of problems we encounter & need to address in interdisciplinary ways #GITT2024.

@PauManzur1 Indeed more than just pronouns (cf @HelenaMoniz5) Recent shift driven by customer demand: "people don't buy from brands that do not reflect their values". Society is changing, people speaking up.

@HelenaMoniz5 Huge changes, depending on country & situation e.g. organisations having different policies (different in Arts & Engineering departments). "You cannot be indifferent if you see something that is not right" in industry. "Language has the plasticidy we want" #GITT2024.

@minibego getting publishers on board (first print: following the rules of the language, second print: be more creative, use inclusive language neopronouns etc.) & clients sending you their inclusive language guides versus you asking them about the language to be used. #GITT2024.

@PauManzur1 Compassion; @HelenaMoniz5 Fragility as strength; @krob Strength framing versus deficit framing & "people are represented in faithful and authentic ways", @minibego "opening spaces for freedom".

@DeBiasByUs @HelenaMoniz5 @krob @minibego On trying to meet high expectations and translating, interpreting, and human rights work. Translating feminist and queer work within the bounds of what is allowed according to the RAE, being a PhD and a published poet #GITT2024

@DeBiasByUs @HelenaMoniz5 @krob On doing interdisciplinary work and feeling slightly out of place everywhere yet making it work. For work in technology = 'why are we doing this?' is important to ask & how do we meet real needs and enable others? #GITT2024

@DeBiasByUs @HelenaMoniz5's intro starts on a personal note about societal expectations of gender to being a woman computational linguist and becoming an international EAMT powerhouse (imposter syndrome hurts all of us), ending with gender challenges in MT #GITT2024
