@GHermanson_ & I have a new paper out, a collab w researchers fr @mfnberlin not on this app (afaik), incl. Jasper Ponstein as 1st author.. "Functional and character disparity are decoupled in turtle mandibles" For details, see thread on 🦋. Paper link: https://t.co/ZiuU0NwMnX

The origin of the shell in the Late Triassic didn't impede turtles to evolve different body sizes, but maybe it locked them into fixed ratios regarding their limbs 🐢🔒 a lot different for example from mammals, who can go crazy 🤯 in their body sizes & proportions 🔓🐳🦇🦘

The shell may act as a morphological constraint to deviations in body size-limb size scaling. This is interesting because body size itself varies across ecologies and through time in turtle evolution, as shown in this neat paper by @BrunaMFarina ( https://t.co/iRXdiDhyT9)📊📈📏

We find very strong isometric relationships between the turtle shell and limb sizes, and use it to estimate fossil turtle body sizes. We propose ~2m as a potential biological maximum for marine lineages, possibly due to reproductive/thermoregulatory constraints 🥚🏖️☀️

Turtle body size and limb size scale nearly isometrically along the group's evolution, although major deviations are only seen in highly specialized ecological or morphological groups. The evolution...

Kickoff to the annoying season when your department “““asks””” you to help with teaching duties under their BS guise that ‘it is good for your CV’. Nobody asks you if you do want that on your CV or not 🙄🙄

🚨Check out our new paper on humerus variation across turtles! 🐢🐢🐢 We describe it for all major groups w/ novel, standardized terms, come up w/ new phylo characters & assess their discrete morpho disparity! https://t.co/Xsfkferwpa DM/email me for questions and/or critics 😉

I’m the PhD student 👇🐢🦴
My PhD student @GHermanson_ just had a chunky paper on humerus variation across turtles accepted in @AnatRecord! We provide new humerus characters, comments on humerus evolution, & disparity analyses – stay tuned. Little sneak of one of the (33!) figures attached 👇🤩🐢🤩🐢

things did go smoothly :)
Huge (30.000 word) anatomical monograph by Yann Rollot on the pig-nosed turtle's skull accepted yesterday @AnatRecord! If things go smoothly, we'll submit another large paper to the journal today – @GHermanson_'s second PhD paper.
