After obtaining her masters in 1982, Antonia focused on pediatric AIDS and was appointed as the U.S. 14th Surgeon General in 1990 as a result of her dedication. Antonia continues to promote awareness on several issues, such as AIDS and alcohol abuse.

Antonia would then work with the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, drafting federal legislation and health warnings on cigarettes.
