There will be no school for GCS students & staff on Monday, April 16 due to extensive damage and power outages caused by a tornado that hit Greensboro Sunday afternoon. Essential personnel, facilities and maintenance staff will report as scheduled & directed by their supervisors.
All GCS schools will be closed for students tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 4 due to inclement weather. It is an optional teacher workday for staff. GCS employees should contact their supervisor or principal and Board policy AFC and AFC-P for additional guidance.
Due to the threat of inclement weather conditions, GCS has cancelled school for students on Wed., Jan. 17, 2018. Cancellations include any school-based events and activities. It will be an optional teacher workday for nonessential staff. Central offices open on a 2-hour delay.
In the wake of nearly 2,000 confirmed teacher absences, GCS will close for students on May 16. Despite efforts to find enough substitutes, we won’t have enough teachers in place to operate schools safely or to ensure high-quality instructional day. More:

COVID-19 UPDATE (Mar. 14, 2020; 5:00pm): All GCS schools will close for students starting on Monday, March 16, in accordance with Governor Roy Cooper’s announcement this afternoon. More information will be coming soon.
Hurricane Michael is moving inland faster than anticipated. As a result, all GCS schools will be closed for students and staff tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 11. Central Offices will operate on a normal schedule. ACES, athletics, and other school activities are canceled.

GCS schools on the traditional academic calendar will begin the 2020-21 year on Aug 17 with 9 weeks of remote instruction. GCS is still considering how students will return to the classroom after the 9 weeks.

Mo Green was the first African American Superintendent of the unified Guilford County Schools. He led the district for more than seven years. During his tenure, graduation rates reached an all-time high, and GCS opened two new middle and early colleges.
