One of the most iconic uses of Corten steel in architecture is the John Deere World Headquarters in Illinois, designed by Eero Saarinen and completed in 1964. The building's bold use of exposed weathering steel helped popularize the material in modern architecture.

Unlike regular steel, which rusts and deteriorates, Corten steel develops a protective oxide layer that prevents further corrosion, giving it a long lifespan and minimal maintenance requirements.

However, it was in the 1960s that Corten steel gained prominence in architecture, thanks to its distinct aesthetic and structural qualities. The name "Corten" is derived from its two main properties: "COR" for corrosion resistance and "TEN" for tensile strength.

Its unique properties were discovered in the early 20th century, with the material's first use dating back to the 1930s in railway coal wagons.
