Grammys hot take that I think would make the nominations and the show more exciting: don’t allow any overlap between Song of the Year and Record of the Year. As is, the nominees are so interchangeable that a lot of people don’t know what the difference is in those categories.

I am partaking in the 10-year retrospective extravaganza for @taylorswift13's '1989'! I wrote about the savviness of Taylor marketing this LP as her first "official" pop play, and about how the songs are often deeper (and sadder) than they get credit for.

Bumping for the weekday crowd.
I wrote about falling in love for the first time, but not in the way you might think. Here’s to the first song, the first album, and the first band that truly stops your heart and changes your life, and to @jimmyeatworld’s ‘Futures’ at 20. Via @chorusfm.

Probably my favorite movie of the year, and I still can’t wrap my head around it just totally failing at the box office AND seemingly being greeted with a shrug by even the people who loved Fury Road.

Some albums change your life. Craig Manning writes about how Jimmy Eat World's 'Futures' changed his, 20 years ago.

10 years ago, a pop-punk band best known for writing euphoric songs about summer somehow made the album that got me through the death of my grandfather. What an honor to share my story with @Yellowcard and 'Lift a Sail' for @chorusfm.

Guess they really had to make room for three albums from 2019 instead, a year that is decidedly not a part of the 2020s. Fishy!

With American Idiot, @GreenDay made perhaps the last truly monocultural rock album. I wrote about it for @chorusfm and why it was such a special, signature moment at a time when this kind of music was mostly falling out of mainstream favor.

Top 4 of the 2020s so far. One of the interesting things I'm finding as I make my mid-decade list is how thoroughly 2020 albums dominate it. Five of the current top 10 are 2020. I was really leaning on my favorite albums that year, almost like how I did when I was young.

“Your favorite record’s on the turntable, I drop the needle and pray.” An all-timer, and a must-spin on this particular day. Thanks, Boss.

My take on this album is that a) it's fine actually; b) the production absolutely neuters some pretty good U2 songs; and c) people getting performatively mad about it being on their iPhones is funny given that most listeners are totally fine letting an algorithm pick their music.
Ten years ago today, with much fanfare, a new U2 album materialized on my iPhone and yours, an act of hubris that instantly blew up in Bono's face. Looked back on a hilarious, dystopian moment in music history:

Retweet for the actual 20th anniversary of this album today!
You know what’s fun? Re-immersing yourself in your favorite albums and playing them on repeat like you did when you first fell in love with them. That’s what I did this week with Butch Walker’s Letters, which I wrote about here for its 20th anniversary.

How many of the Album of the Year nominees for next year's Grammys are going to be insanely long albums that have (generously) a 50-60 percent hit rate? Over or under 4 of the 8?

I have very complicated feelings about @gaslightanthem's 2014 album 'Get Hurt,' and I tried to untangle them in honor of the record's 10-year anniversary this week. Includes an alternate tracklist that I think absolutely rules! Via @chorusfm. https://t.co/t0GLKSlm2X
