Ooft it was a real honour to have Prof Jann Gardner, Chief Executive and Dr Lesley Thomson KC, Chair of @nhsggc visit us last week. Dr Thomson posed alongside our display about Rebecca Strong, our first matron. Three formidable and remarkable women; one in 1879, two in 2025.

He was describing 'the method of separation by diffusion through a septum of gelatinous matter' In 1861 he described the effects of dialysing urine - electrolytes went into the external water and a white mass was left - 'pure urea'.

Dr Kolff (1911-2009)who invented the 1st dialyser came to Glasgow in 1979 & is pictured here at the statue of Thomas Graham in George Square. Graham was a Professor Chemistry who coined the term dialysis from the Greek dia - through and luein - to loosen.

The Kidney Unit at GRI dialysed its first patient in 1959. Arthur Kennedy was in charge - pictured with a biochemist & the dialysis machine (pic 1/2). It was called a Kolff Kidney after it's inventor, Dr W.J. Kolff. The Kolff kidney was last used in Glasgow in 1974 (pic3/4).
