What we didn't know 10 years ago when we were working to stop the incinerator was that City Schools launched a commercial compost pilot with local haulers. The vision was beautiful but it was cut short by interests that are invested in more waste. We are up against a lot. .

(2) now we want City Schools and all local educational institutions to choose to support local compost and Zero Waste infrastructure by taking the lead in pledging their food scraps to a local Baltimore based facility.

(1) ~10 years ago we, as high school students, started the process of stopping the plan to build the nation's largest incinerator here in Baltimore. City Schools were lined up to buy their dirty energy and we convinced them to choose not to. .

Here's the problem. we are well into the administration and we still don't know their approach to getting a local compost system built. This is not ok and respectfully, it's a challenge but not rocket science. Our public leaders owe us more transparency @MayorBMScott !.

What's up w/ Baltimore NOT starting the development of compost infrastructure already? There's the state law, a Mayor who says he will do everything to break reliance on BRESCO, and institutions, communities, workers and operators ready to go. what's up @MayorBMScott ?.

How do we know when our institutions & large food waste generators are taking concrete steps for #ZeroWaste? One way is if they contract for hauling their food scraps to be composted instead of landfilled/ incinerated. County Schools are doing it. City Schools can too.

Yes! Game changing local solution for climate change. Source of new local union jobs. Will heal the soil and benefits go on. Obstacle = who currently profits from burning food scraps and we must take them on.

Baltimore has a compost drop off program. Good. Residents are participating. Baltimore has no local compost facility. Bad. Residents are working together to change that.

Yes! Now it's time to build Baltimore's own compost infrastructure so we can take all food out of the waste stream. Burn/bury food waste = climate injustice and disaster. Zero Waste = good union jobs, local hiring, concrete community and environmental benefits.

Yes! Reuse systems = a big part of clean air, reducing toxic pollution and combatting climate catastrophe. Let's define reuse systems as also generating union jobs, worker ownership and community governance.

#WeChooseReuse! . Reuse systems have existed in the past. We took a wrong turn but it's fixable! Now we have technology to make these systems seamless and easy for the businesses, municipalities and the individual!.
