Zionism is a kind of racism. It is essentially colonial. It has manifested in an apartheid regime calling itself "the Jewish state" that dominates non-Jews, and particularly Palestinians.
You can't practice anti-racism at the same time as identifying with, or supporting, Zionism
Landlord tried to boot my client, his partner, & 6 y.o. kid out of a home they'd occupied for 11 years. Why? A small amount of rent arrears *that were being repaid*. We told the judge about disrepair, LL's claim fell apart. If your landlord tries to ruin your life, fight back!
Difficult to over-state the gravity of this precedent. The defendants openly stated that they tore down the statue, and that their actions were justified. The jury still acquitted them. Sometimes we win!
This week I represented an asylum seeker from Gaza. The Home Office didn't even try to deny that he'd face indiscriminate violence if returned. The Judge openly said "the Gaza strip is being systematically destroyed by the Israeli army".
All sympathy for Israel is drying up. ⏳
My client, a Palestinian citizen of Israel, just persuaded the UK Home Office to grant him asylum. He said Israel would persecute him because he's Palestinian, anti-Zionist, and a Muslim.
This is likely to assist other Palestinians who seek protection from Israeli apartheid.
🧵The Home Office has conceded that the Israeli government is likely to persecute a Palestinian citizen of Israel if returned to Israel & has agreed to grant him asylum.
The decision came less than 24 hrs before a tribunal hearing at which the Home Office was to defend its…
The cops have paid damages and apologised for unlawfully arresting me. Maybe next time they'll think twice before messing with a trade union picket line.
£5K going straight to the strike fund, nice to know the Met Police are subsidising UVW workers who go on strike.
Our anti-Zionist Jewish client has won the right to stay in Britain.
The case will now continue to the Upper Tribunal, who'll be asked to make findings about the risks Israel’s apartheid regime poses to Jews and Palestinians.
If successful, the appeal will set a vital precedent
NEW - UK judge overturns Home Office decision on Israeli asylum-seeker who refuses to serve in army for fear of committing war crimes
He & his lawyers
@fahadansari
@FranckMagennis
welcome the ruling - but are pressing on with his case
More on why here:
@concheyes
Practicing barrister here. Literally all the people complaining about disrepair that happened in the last 6 years need to slide into my DMs so we can talk about how easy it is to sue a landlord.
If you were arrested or bullied by the cops tonight, I hope you know that you're not alone. We will defend you against prosecutions, and we will show you how to sue the police. We won't let these bullies push you around. The workers' movement has your back.
Easily the longest set of oral legal submissions I've ever made. And possibly the most important case I've ever argued. If the Appellant, whose bravery is simply astonishing, succeeds, it could set a vital precedent for anyone seeking refuge against Israeli apartheid.
NEW: Today, a UK court heard an asylum appeal from an Israeli student who is refusing to serve in the army.
The
@ukhomeoffice
&
@FranckMagennis
made their arguments over a four-hour marathon hearing.
Some highlights here:
Witness the spectacle of Britain's media industry holding *the opposition* to account by repeating the government's war rhetoric, while allowing *the government itself* off the hook. Imagine if Johnson's hawkish government were interrogated in this way. Pathetic.
I've just been arrested, then immediately de-arrested, while asking a police officer to explain why he was threatening to break up a lawful strike. It's an outrageous threat to everyone who cares about workers' right to strike, and citizens' right not to be arbitrarily arrested.
I'm hearing from Legal Observer comrades that the cops were briefed. They knew what they were doing: move in and arrest the lawyers. Chilling. Absolutely outrageous. A sure sign of things to come if we don't fight back.
Legal observers like
@blkprotestlegal
are not participating in protests, they are there to monitor the police to check human rights are being upheld. Arresting them is an attack on our human rights. The police are once again routinely abusing their existing powers.
#KillTheBill
I represent this Palestinian citizen of Israel who has claimed asylum. He fears persecution at the hands of Israel's apartheid regime. If successful, his case could set an important precedent.
Please share widely with your networks.
I am back on the picket line where yesterday I was unlawfully arrested. If
@StGeorgesUni
think they can use the police to intimidate striking workers, they have another thing coming. I've instructed
@HJAcivillibs
and am suing the police, donating all damages to the strike fund.
A jury acquitted the Colston 4. It's interesting to think of the north of Ireland, where the British colonial administrators imposed jury-less ‘Diplock’ courts (which were only abolished in 2007). Why? Because they knew that too many juries would acquit Irish republicans.
If you're worried about your boss's response to coronavirus, you urgently need to join a trade union.
Individually we can do almost nothing. Collectively we can make sweeping demands: sick pay, the right to self-islolate, and whatever else this crisis will require as it unfolds.
Interesting to think how the people who clean our public and private spaces (often migrants, often invisible, often precarious) now occupy the frontline in responding to the COVID-19 outbreak. That work is vastly undervalued and under-appreciated until it's seen to be lifesaving.
Struggling to process the sheer historical weight and implications of this gesture. Guernica, of all places.
Jesus Christ, the air raid siren. Listen to it.
Chilling display in Guernica.
In 1937, the Nazis bombed this village on behalf of Franco’s Spanish Nationalists, who saw it as a center for the resistance against fascism.
86 years later, descendants of that horror express solidarity with Palestinians.
Speaking to a friend in Gaza, about the ceasefire, about the general strike. She says this time it feels different. Despite the devastating loss of life in Gaza, it feels like a victory. As if the Zionists were confronted with a new force that is awakening across Palestine.
Anywhere I went in Palestine, any time I mentioned I was Irish, Palestinians always took a moment to acknowledge their gratitude to the Irish people. This is why. Solidarity from one colonised people to another. A beautiful thing. Tiocfaidh ár lá.
Here it is folks!
#Ireland
becomes first member of EU to recognize & reject Israel's de-facto, illegal annexation of East Jerusalem/West Bank. 2morrow in the Dail there will be a vote to expel the Israeli Ambassador & seek economic sanctions against Israel
Israel has lost in the ICJ. The Court's order will stand as a permanent, authoritative record of the genocidal words uttered by the most senior Israeli government officials. An indelible stain on the Zionist colonial project
Really uneasy about the way so many have placed emphasis on "activist lawyers", rather than the brave, terrified people on those charter flights. The lawyers were paid to do a stressful but rewarding job. Theose on the planes were facing persecution and death. Perspective, please
Look at these LibDem voters holding court over the coming Labour leadership election. Your centrist LibDem leader couldn't even hold her own seat, how about get your own house in order before intervening in left wing politics?
On juries, worth remembering the amazing Smash EDO case from 2010. 7 defendants caused about £200,000 damage to an arms factory, admitted in open court what they'd done, said it was necessary & justified to prevent Israeli war crimes. Jury acquitted them.
The Stansted 15 have today had their convictions quashed on appeal. Absolutely brilliant news!
This article sheds some light on just how terrifying their ordeal has been. The CPS have some very serious questions to answer.
Police have just arrested multiple legal observers. LOs are brave and commited people who volunteer their time and knowledge to hold the police to account. For them to have been arrested is an outrageous injustice.
Full solidarity with those arrested,
@LSWUnited
has your back.
Kenyan client was just granted immigration bail, partly based on COVID-19. The Judge said “I am persuaded by the pandemic point. It seems to me completely relevant that that imminence of removal just cannot be guaranteed in these fast changing times with air travel restrictions.”
@BarristerSecret
Haven't you a working class black kid to prosecute, or maybe a victim of trafficking, at the behest of one of your institutionally racist clients?
British MPs once more using their colonial occupation of my country as a political football, outdoing each other to score points. The IRA committed horrific crimes, no doubt. Those crimes *pale* next to the British Army's centuries of colonial butchery in countries the world over
Sat working in a cafe. Overheard a professional "representing the interests of the landlord" talk on zoom for close to an hour about how best to evict a tenant from her house. Tenant was recently detained in mental hospital.
Time to smash capitalism guys. Nothing left to save.
Astonishingly, he's not being ironic. He genuinely hasn't fathomed why judges in a *former British colony* might be "dressed like English judges". The unreconstructed colonialism of the British legal system is truly sickening.
Something chilling about Hong Kong judges, dressed like English judges, using the same expressions as English judges, in a court having many of the trappings of an English court, happily enforcing the will of a ruthless totalitarian regime.
Urgh, all the liberals fawning over Starmer's continued judicialisation of the political process. Law smothering politics in the worst, most boring possible way. Five more years of this dross.
In Jan the cops unlawfully arrested me at a
@UVWunion
picket line. It was an attack on BAME outsourced workers striking for dignified work conditions. Don't let the cops push workers around. We're suing them, and we'd be v grateful for your support.
Starmer calculating there's no point opposing the government on literally anything. Election is years away, better to reassure potential millionaire donors: "dw, a Labour gov would also starve working class kids." He's deliberately closing the space Corbyn opened. Utterly craven.
When Israeli apartheid finally falls, spineless liars like Keir Starmer will pretend to have supported that outcome all along. But we will remember that when it mattered, when Zionists were burning homes and murdering Palestinians, he and his allies backed apartheid to the hilt.
The Zionist pogrom taking place in Huwara is a consequence of the Israeli government’s Jewish supremacist political platform. This is what happens when instead of getting a call from the International Criminal Court you enjoy support from

The ICJ's order may be of assistance to Palestinians in the UK who want to facilitate their family members' escape from Gaza. The Home Office arguably has a duty to grant Article 8 ECHR applications outside the Immigration Rules for family members facing genocide in Gaza.
Bail granted: "Mr Magennis I don't need to hear from you." If a Judge says that, it means she thinks the need to release a detainee is so obvious that it needs no argument
Since Covid, I haven't lost a single bail app. Since Covid, immigration detention has become totally broken
Moralising about whether Jews who refuse to serve in the fascist "IDF" are "heroes" or "doing the bare minimum" is useless. We must find concrete ways to organise with them and grow their number. Depriving the colonial military of recruits is a political task, not a moral problem
How embarrassing. A big, sluggish trade union disingenuously trying to claim credit for another, more radical union's victory. Why misrepresent things so totally? Why refuse to mention the name
@UVWunion
, whose members went on strike?
Stop erasing the workers who fought so hard.
A thousand public service workers - porters, cleaners and catering staff - back in house, back in our NHS. This is a victory for UNISON members and a victory for common sense
Saying "you and me both mate" under your breath when a baby is crying in public = correct position tbh.
Solidarity with infant comrades angry at the world for sum reason.
I'm incredibly excited to announce that I'll be joining

Bosses beware! UVW is on the march!

The British left is drenched in the ideology of Labourism. It seriously inhibits us from thinking and organising internationally. The difficult fact is that British and Britain-based workers materially benefit from imperialism. Any socialist project needs to confront that reality
Very excited to announce: we're founding an internationalist, anti-capitalist psychotherapy practice. After much work behind the scenes, we're now recruiting.
Please share with people involved in mental health services. Feel free to DM if you wanna talk about it. Please RT.
🚨Vacancy🚨 We’re launching a psychotherapy practice! ‘The Red Clinic’ is recruiting a part-time admin assistant to help get the project off the ground.
Please share with people interested in mental health, Marxism, and worker organising.

In the UK it's a piece of piss. Some of the bigger LLs might mess you around re: corporate identity, but mostly if they've not repaired your property you get a few grand out of them. Failure to protect deposit is also good for up to 3x the value of the deposit, which ain't bad.
When I qualified as a barrister so many lawyers told me I needed to stfu about my politics. Liberalism tries to make u feel like a massive moron for being communist
tl;dr shiny new profile (shoutout Gramsci). Sols: get in my DMs n let's sue the cops
@drleatongray

Only it doesn't work both ways, does it? Conflating the position of landlord with tenant is borderline absurd. This scapegoating drugs story is a transparent attempt at victim blaming. Landlords add nothing to society, they're rent seekers, we've known that since Adam Smith.
Beyond humbled by this man's bravery. He's in the First-tier Tribunal today resisting conscription into Israel's apartheid regime. Please read about his case and his ongoing struggle to support Palestinians.
We are in Manchester tribunal today representing an Orthodox Jewish student who fled Israel to avoid being conscripted into the army and forced to commit war crimes and the crime against humanity that is apartheid.

Thousands of Catholics interned without charge or trial *for years* based on mere suspicion. 10 years for IRA membership in a conveyer belt of jury-less courts.
Meanwhile we know the names of those murdering British soldiers. But not one of them will ever be held accountable.
In the High Court 1st time yesterday. Terrifying, barely slept prepping the 2 nights prior. That feeling like a better lawyer might secure what you couldn’t. Sitting with a comrade’s life in your hands
We got urgent interim relief. He’ll be out in a week. Abolish the Home Office
Just read my detained client’s witness statement. Paranoid schizophrenic, been detained for more than a year. Was driven into a mental hospital by the Home Office. If there is a hell, god help the bastards who did this to him.
Happy to report I've been having a slow, relaxing weekend. Downtime is so important to good mental health. I wish this stuff had been properly explored in law school. The legal sector has a poisonous culture of overwork, and I struggle to imagine how we might overcome it.

You call me "weird" to your hundreds of thousands of followers from behind your veil of anonymity, then go full Karen when I ask you to take your cop energy off my TL? You do you mate.
Today's a difficult day for anyone who cares about *both* anti-Jewish & anti-Palestinian racism. Selectively challenging one while sidelining the other causes immense harm. For people like me, who are neither Palestinian nor Jewish, today's a day for listening, love & solidarity.
I'm gonna be co-designing a 10-week communist mini-MBA with
@London_Learning
. Main motivations: 1) help the left get better at designing & administering institutions 2) immanent critique of bourgeois business admin theory. Hmu with suggestions + tag ppl I should be talking to!
I've been to all these places in Palestine: Jaffa, Acre, Haifa, Nazareth. I talk to Palestinians, they say "Oh, you went to X? My family was evicted from that town. I've never been." They ask for photos. Some white guy with the "right" passport can visit, but they can't.
A thing every worker based in Britain should know: if you are dismissed for trade union membership or activities, you have only *one week* to issue a claim for interim relief.
My DMs are always open if you think you or your comrades have been done over by your boss.
These workers and their struggle have now hit the national press. The cops tried to intimidate them by arresting me at the picket line on Monday. Now we're suing.
Don't let the cops, or your boss, or anyone push you around. Join a union, fight back, win!
Absolutely withering criticism of the Home Office from this Deputy High Court Judge. Granting urgent interim relief, the Judge bemoaned the “Unacceptable state of affairs” regarding a migrant “still languishing in detention” despite being granted immigration bail *in March*.
This is like a strike. You wouldn't tell an individual worker to go on strike by herself. You organise together and do it en masse.
The same applies to how the left in Labour should respond to this attack. Whatever we do, we do it democratically and collectively or we're doomed.
This is a very welcome intervention by McCluskey. The trade unions openly criticising the leadership creates a massive problem for Starmer. Trade union pressure is central to how the left regroups and regains control of Labour.
I am astonished at the decision to withdraw the PLP whip from Jeremy Corbyn. This is a vindictive and vengeful action which despoils Party democracy and due process alike and amounts to overruling the unanimous decision of the NEC panel yesterday to readmit him to the Party. 1/3
Liberals hate being reminded of this. For all their moralistic condemnations of communism, it will always be true that 20 million Soviets gave their lives to defeat fascism.
On political educational, the left needs to obliterate the idea of a clear left-right split. There are *3* positions: conservative, radical/left, & *liberal*.
Liberals are the ideological & political enemies of the left. The workers’ movement needs to be totally clear about that
Dear British Left,
Whatever result greets us tomorrow, please can we agree on one thing: to prohibit requests that Sinn Féin should prop up Labour by taking their seats. You have embarrassingly consistent form in this regard.
Sincerely,
Anyone with a clue about Irish history
Feel the need to express gratitude to

for his incredible book 'Mute Compulsion'. As a non-academic who struggles to keep up with theory, his book has helped me to consolidate and expand my understanding of debates within contemporary Marxism. Highly recommended reading.
Can white, middle class British people with dual citizenship stop loudly talking about leaving the UK? You’re not the ones attacked by this crisis. That'll be the people who clean your offices, who speak no English, and whose first post-election experience will be racist abuse.
Hairs standing on end after hearing from workers who defeated their bosses after voting for *40 days* of strike action. The bosses caved after a few days. Such eloquence and power and dignity in this union.
Germany is one of the very worst countries when it comes to protecting pro-Palestinian speech. Yet even a *German* court has acknowledged people's right to say "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free". Don't let Zionists try to intimidate you out of saying it.
OUR MOVEMENT’S VICTORIES IN GERMANY!
In a context where extremely repressive 🇩🇪 authorities are violating the most fundamental rights, activists & lawyers of our network recently won two very important court cases, reaffirming the legality of Palestine solidarity slogans! /1
Police officers *know* they can't act with such impunity when LOs are there to *observe* them, that's why they moved in and *singled out* the lawyers for arrest.
Fed up of feeling complicit in a capitalist legal system? We've organised a conference aimed at Marxist lawyers & academics interested in exploring the intersection of legal practice and revolutionary politics. If there's any radical potential in practicing law, we wanna find it.
As we speak, Palestinians are carrying out *a general strike* across Palestine. The BBC, along with most other British news media, are not covering it.

And I imagine you've never represented a single mother with four kids battling with cancer whose landlord has decided to evict her because he wants "his" property back.
The problem with an immigration law practice is that it requires you to quibble with these national borders instead of demolishing them. We need to find ways of dismantling borders in coalition with those most directly attacked by them.
This statistic is utterly shocking. In any sane society, this information would shake the UK's immigration detention regime to its foundations.
That regime doesn't work, even on its own terms. It ruins people's lives for no reason.
In last year, 77% of people detained were released back into the UK, detention having served no purpose other than to inflict pointless suffering.
Home Office claims detention only used when absolutely necessary to effect removal. Their own stats tell a different story.
We must remember that police are servants of the capitalist state. They're paid to dominate and attack working class communities. When you see cops attacking working class communities, you side with the workers or you're not a socialist. It's that simple.
An unarmed 26 year old working at a hotel in Basrah, Iraq. Murdered by unrepentant butchers in the British Army.
"The applicant’s son’s body and face were covered in blood and bruises; his nose was broken and part of the skin of his face had been torn away." (Al Skeini v UK)
Until recently the Israeli government was aiming for a 70:30 ratio. They've retreated to 60:40 because Palestinians keep existing and resisting, in Jerusalem and beyond. The Israeli regime is obviously and blatantly apartheid. No one serious can deny that.
Israel has made explicit its goal of “maintaining a solid Jewish majority in [Jerusalem],” capping the Palestinian population at 40 percent. The only way to do that, given demographic trends, is through ethnic cleansing.

"The struggle of Palestinian people is linked with the struggle of the forces of revolution and progress in the world."
Very few people (myself included) on the radical left seem to have any coherent answer to the question "What is to be done?" Are they just keeping it to themselves, or is the left totally without direction?

What, "the (entire?) public" voted against free movement of workers so we all just have to pack up our internationalism stall, abandon our critique of empire and labour aristocracy (did you ever have one?) and become nativists now?
