“The world cannot swell with pride the man who is subject to truth; nor will he be swayed by the flattery of all his admirers, if he has established all his trust in God. For those who do all the talking amount to nothing; they fail with their din of words.” - Imitation of Christ.

"Work is one of the characteristics that distinguish man from the rest of creatures. Only man is capable of work, and only man works. Thus work bears a particular mark of man and of humanity, the mark of a person operating within a community of persons." -Pope St. John Paul II

“It is not as if a good life of some sort came first, and that thereupon God showed his love and esteem for it from on high…No, our life was displeasing to him. He will, therefore, condemn what we have done but he will save what he himself has done in us.” -St. Augustine.

“There is no doubt that blessed John suffered as a witness to our Redeemer, whose forerunner he was, and gave his life for him…Herod demanded not that he deny Christ, but only that he deny truth. Because John shed his blood for truth, he surely died for Christ.” -Venerable Bede

Well into his 90s, Fr. Torrell was still publishing several books a year. These three capture the essence of his extensive scholarship.

I had the privilege of living for several years in the same community as Fr. Jean-Pierre Torrell. He was a model friar and scholar. It is fitting that he went home to the Lord on the feast of St. Augustine, whose Rule he followed, and whose texts St. Thomas led him to reverence.

“Entering into myself I saw, as it were with the eye of the soul, what was beyond the eye of the soul: your immutable light…This light was above me because it made me; I was below it because I was created by it. He who has come to know the truth knows this light.” -St. Augustine

“The blessings of human dignity, communion, and freedom—all the good fruits on earth of man’s co-operation with nature in the Spirit and according to the Lord’s command—will be found again in the world to come, but purified of all stain, resplendent and transfigured.” -Vatican II.
