“Substance use and addiction is like being a prisoner on Alcatraz: You can see San Francisco right across the water, but the prison makes sure you feel like you’ll never reach it. We need to do better to break down the barriers and help people be able to help themselves.”

Why is a sense of belonging so important to us? People who have struggled to feel like they belong in the community experience stigma, one of the biggest blocks to belonging. Do you recognize some of these sentiments? #foundry

One thing the peer speakers have all said is “If we had someone we could talk to when we were younger, someone who listened and offered their support, we might be in a different place today.” This shows how important it is for youth to have space to be empowered and listened to.

What is something you can do to help? You don’t need to be a professional or anything like that! The most meaningful action you can do is simply to treat someone like they are human. Talk to them like a human, connect and build relationships. #foundry

This framework is a simple but straightforward way to show how change can happen in community when you listen to the voices of those who are often overlooked. When service providers listen, they can take action and make their spaces more accessible #foundry

More often than not, stories of recovery tend to focus on struggle and loss. It’s true that recovery is not without those things - however it is also about hope, about finding purpose, and about feeling a sense of belonging in a community without stigma #foundry

When we acknowledge the land we stand upon, we connect ourselves to understanding the values of community and coming together as one, no matter who we are or where we come from. Thank you Elder Terry Point centering and grounding for this event. #foundry
