This requires the provision of free period products, safe WASH facilities, and comprehensive menstrual education that enables girls to manage their periods safely and with dignity, remain in school, and learn alongside their male counterparts.

On this International Day of Education, we are calling for education policies that foregrounds girls’ voices and remove the barriers that silence them.

Menstrual equity is not a side issue. It is a justice issue. It is foundational to inclusive, quality education. Yet for too long, it has been treated as peripheral in education policies.

This year’s theme for the International Day of Education is The Power of Youth in Co-Creating Education. But real co-creation is not possible when girls are excluded from classrooms due to menstrual poverty and stigma.
