today's AI feels smart enough for most tasks of up to a few minutes in duration, and when it can't get the job done, it's often because it lacks sufficient background context for even a very capable human to succeed

Re-discovering what 'fun' it is to run example projects built for Unix on Windows. Even with Docker etc. there's a ton of 'no that tool doesn't exist please install a Win32 version from this shifty-looking webpage'...and of course the back/forward slashes, always.

context engineering is what happens when liberal arts ppl reinvent memory management. hard to blame them. prob never took classes on compilers, operating systems, or computer systems.

For LLM systems design, we can borrow the idea of memory hierarchy from computer architecture and draw a lot of parallels. Longer context doesn't invalidate the need for "RAG". Larger LLMs don't invalidate the need for search engines. Different layers of the stack.
