My oldest brother, Peter, (also a Redemptorist) died today.
Sad, but a relief after a long battle with dementia. He loved hurling; I wonder will he see the Leinster final from the next life!!
Ian Burke (Corofin) was in bed with flu, and cried off the team. His mother gave him “something”, felt better and went to match. Came on for 2nd half; turned game around and was Man of the Match. Anyone with flu in north Galway - go to Ian Burke’s mother for that “something”
According to Matthew Fox, Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict silenced 108 theologians, and that doesn’t include an unknown number of lesser mortals like myself. How can he be called a good theologian, if he was so afraid of different views?
I detest how the media refer to a politician changing his/her mind as a ‘u turn’, as if it was something bad. I regard changing one’s mind, after acquiring more information and reflecting on it, as an important part of good leadership.
As a Galway man, I am concerned about what is happening in Oughterard. No doubt there are genuine concerns, but this increasingly seems like something much darker and more ugly. And the march today started from the church; what is that about?
Could someone tell bishops to stop wearing mitres; at today’s funeral, Tom Deenihan, sporting a mitre, said the murder of Ashling raised questions about society’s attitude to women. Really, does he not see how inappropriate that was coming from him.
Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, said of Trump on Fox News: ‘I really salute his leadership’. He was one of the ‘brass’ sent by Benedict to investigate Irish Church. How sick.
So now the German bishop who supports women’s ordination has been joined by the new man in Dublin, who supports women deacons, and undercuts the main argument about ordination,- that Scripture forbids it. No longer dissident, I am now mainstream!
Surprised to hear Peirce Doherty speaking freely on Morning Ireland re a case currently before the DPP, and declaring his own judgment of the case — and being allowed to do so by the presenter. Does that not invalidate the whole case?
The repetitive nature of Una Mullally”s articles on one particular political party in her IT column would seem to border on obsession. Not good for a supposedly objective columnist
I might be an outlier here, but I think that awarding Journalist of the Year for reporting on Golfgate is a perfect illustration of how trivial so much of our media, even the mainstream media, has become.
“Why do we still allow these religious orders to exist? They are nothing more than vehicles for corruption and abuse, and they need to be shut down.” Fergus Finlay. Hate speech, directed at, among others, myself. Doesn’t surprise me from Fergus.
Bishops challenging medical and State authority; effectively lining up with anti-vaxers. Try questioning authority in Church, as I know, and the rule of law is rigidly applied.
Circumstances outside my control dictated that I celebrated my sister’s funeral Mass in her home. As it transpired it was the perfect setting. Throwback to the early Church. Way to go in the future?
I have come from a different political stable, but to describe Michael Martin as having “a narrow, bitter mind” is about as far off the mark as you could go. I could think of some words to describe the mind of the person who said that about him.
SF have lessons to learn: the high moral ground is a lonely and exposed place; one needs to be certain that one’s own house is totally in order, or else it backfires.
Something to look forward to!!!!!!
On October 18th there will be an hour long documentary on TG4 covering the story of my suspension, and my years of conflict with Church authorities.
What a depressingly stupid document from the CDF (why am I surprised?); gay couples cannot be blessed, they are sinners. But we all love them and have compassion on them!!!!! How patronising. Do they enjoy insulting and condemning people?
Hans Kung has died. He was an inspiration to so many of us. Always a sign of hope, even in the darkest times for the Church. Courageous, and clear sighted. I will miss him
Both Dara Colleary and Phil Hogan deserve abject apologies from their respective leaders. And what about the media, who gave an award to the person who led the frenzied, and scandalous (to use their own word) reporting
Cardinal Gerhard Muller is defying Francis and the Synod by going on EWTN. He is the guy, as head of the CDF, who was so high and mighty in condemning me and others. What a self-righteous hypocrite. And he claims to love the Church!
Cardinal Ricard, who we now know abused a teenage girl many years ago, and covered it up, worked in the CDF during all their dealing with me. Does that not call their judgments into question? I think it does.
Sad day for U.S. Church- indeed the whole Church. What will happen when some priest refuse communion to those they judge unworthy, as they will? Such a perverted mess. How did it come to this?
It is exactly 30 years (1993) since I first spoke publicly on the need for change in Church attitudes and teachings on LGBTQ. Good to hear see Francis’ statement. Sadly, it is 11 years since I could speak on anything in church.
I understand the funeral of Teilhard de Chardin ( died while banished to the U.S.) had only ten people in attendance. One of the greatest minds in Christian history, happily now re-instated by Francis.
I think the bishops who are defying health and official advise, and going ahead with sacramental gatherings, are making a mistake. It would be much better if they faced the reality that these events mostly have little real religious meaning.
It depresses me to witness yet again the utter stupidity of the Vatican; not only in its attempts yet again to silence women’s voices, but also in its total lack of any political common sense. What world do these men live in?
Poor Sinead. She was ordained a priest of Pius X version, the most reactionary, conservative group in CC. Then later she became a Muslin, the religion that most oppresses women. Neither move would help her find peace. I hope she finds it now.
Today’s Mass reading from the Prophet Isaiah:
“I dismiss you from your office, I remove you from your post”.
And who said the Old Testament was not up to date and relevant.
Reading through the excellent report of the Dublin diocesan Synodal Process, I find that every issue that I was condemned for figures strongly and clearly in the report; women, priesthood, sexual teaching, - and all attributed to the Holy Spirit.
Bernardos says families going to bed at 7.00 - cannot afford light or heat. Last evening, beautifully balmy, I sat in the garden at 7.00 in sunshine, with all house doors open. No light needed for at least another two hours. Who does these surveys?
“We have done everything possible to dialogue with Fr. Flannery. It has not always been easy. We have done everything possible”
Ladaria is a Jesuit; he knows what ‘dialogue’ entails. He must know this statement is false. This has upset me this evening
When I stood at the altar celebrating Peter’s funeral Mass last Monday I quickly felt as if I had never been away, that this was where I belonged. I think I would like to get back, but not at any price.
The Irish bishops are launching a major new initiative, the Synodal Path, and they appoint two lay people as chair & vice-chair of the organising committee, the chair being a woman. What a change. They deserve credit.
Completed last wishes of Geraldine, with burial of her ashes in parents grave in Killimordaly. Lovely ceremony, with Brendan Hoban as celebrant. Old friends from my ministry days provided beautiful music and singing. Everything now done as she wished. Goodbye
I loved Christmas midnight Mass in MSA, Limerick. I was in charge there in the nineties, and I used preach at it; packed church, great atmosphere. Little did I know I would end up outside it all. Maybe the topics I chose were a harbinger of what was to come.
Interesting article in today’s IT. Neil Fox, four years in religious life, and studying for priesthood in Maynooth. 12 in the class; preponderance of gays, including himself. 9 of 12 Trump supporters, and rigidly doctrinaire. Future of church?
Got an advance copy of my new book in the post this morning. Lovely feeling getting it in your hands for the first time. Whatever others may think, I think it is great. But I would say that, wouldn’t I
Imagine the Sunday Business Post interviewing Farage, and then using that as their main point of advertising. I cannot think of a worse way of spending my Sunday than reading the views of Nigel Farage. SBP not for me!
Under the new reforms of the Curia announced by Francis, I note that the CDF must “seek dialogue” with those it considers to have been in breach of Church teaching. Should I stay near my phone?
John Donnelly, priest of Killaloe diocese, and one of the best and loveliest men I ever had the privilege of knowing, has died. He had a long and gracious life. Eternity, whatever it is, will be blessed by his presence.
I really like this article in the NCR; fair and accurate.
Vatican tells Irish priest Flannery to sign fidelity oaths, or remain suspended | National Catholic Reporter
My cousin had a child in the Tuam baby home, who died at 8 months. Her remains are to be exhumed, along with the others. Neither I, nor as far as I know, any relative has been consulted. Her mother is dead. Am I wrong to question the propriety of this?
Not surprised at Ratzinger (emeritus Benedict). Been quietly trying to undermine Francis for long time. They say he is holy. I think that a major sign of holiness is the ability to let go. He clearly cannot - still trying to control. Doing great damage.
My native half parish; two churches, no priest, no Mass, very sad. But for outdated, non-sensical rules (only male celibates), there are people there who would celebrate Eucharist, and bring those empty buildings and the community to life again.
Apparently, the only way the CDF will be willing to review my case is if I give them a statement saying I am opposed to the ordination of women. This is now, not ten years ago!
Don’t think I will be lying awake trying to decide this one.
I seem to be hearing from many who, like myself, are drastically limiting their exposure to news. Too many warnings, dire predictions, misery. Too much of that leads to depression and hopelessness.
Very impressed by Joe Biden at the press conference this evening. Strong, clear and decisive. Really sounds like a new era in U.S. politics. Hope for the future
At a funeral Mass today the priest said if we had not been practising our faith, not to come to communion, but to come up with arms across breast, and he would give a blessing. I thought of the woman of Samaria with Jesus, and it felt wrong.
The Taoiseach uses a Scriptural reference. Those who don’t know the Bible take it literally, and are up in arms. But why does the Israeli minister object? Would it have to do with the fact that the reference is from the words of Jesus?
How stupid can you get! The Papal Nuncio getting a letter signed by Ursula Halligan and Colm Holmes, and he replies to Colm, and ignores Ursula. Are they learning anything?
I see Chaput, retired archbishop of Philadelphia, has publicly called the Pope a liar. Nine years ago they thought it was terrible when I repeated a common theological opinion that Jesus did not ordain priests. Times have changed in our church.
Big changes happening in our Church. In recent weeks three top men, two Cardinals and an Archbishop, called for major change, even in one case a change of doctrine.
I ask, in view of this, how long more will I be kept in limbo?
I think Archbishop Martin could have chosen someone better than Cardinal Dolan to celebrate the centenary Mass in Armagh, given Dolan’s poor record on Synodality & Church Reform generally and on clerical abuse. Also his apparent closeness to Trump.
Benedict/Joseph Ratzinger has died. I like what Tom Reece (American Jesuit) said: he was a flawed and holy man. Personally I have no great reason to mourn him, but may he rest in peace
An idea for Masses during the pandemic: Open air, easier for physical distancing, and weather generally good. For communion, invite people to bring their own piece of bread and small container of wine. Let’s not limit the presence of Jesus.
I find it hard to listen to the leader of Sinn Fein mourning the death of Seamus Mallon, surely one of the great people of Irish history. But Seamus was more forgiving that many of us.
I just got a lovely letter from an old Catholic lady in England, saying that my book, From the Outside, had given her great hope. That alone, apart from anything else, in my view makes it all worthwhile.
Really disappointing to see both Limerick & Kildare & Leighlin beginning to train male only deacons. Can they really be so blind to how inappropriate it is? Certainly won’t help the proposed Synodal Process.
3rd world health service? In past ten years I had two bouts of about a week, in Galway & Limerick. Couple of days on trolley each time. No big deal. Medical care was first class ; I appreciate our high quality health service
Just sent off all ten chapters of my latest book to be edited. Always a nice feeling. Due for publishing in October, all going well.
And this will be my tenth book to be published. First one in ‘97, twenty three years ago.
Bishop Crean’s talk in Cobh today made me smile. He echoed BoJo by saying those who predict the demise of the Church are greatly mistaken. Went on to say that the role of the Church is to serve, not control. He sure was in control when he banned me from speaking in Killeagh.
Even Portmarnock has now opened the door to women. Any chance the Church might follow? But we are told this upcoming Synod cannot deal with matters of doctrine. No chance there so!
Two documents from Spring meeting of Irish Bishops, both looking for consultation with the people. This has signs of real, positive change. Pressure from Rome also a factor. Whatever, it is good to see.
Interesting they never banned Kung from ministry. They must regard me a more dangerous heretic than him. Now there’s a thought! Or were they afraid of him?
Francis: “God is not aloof and on high- an ugly, untrue image; he is a Father who follows our every step, no cold bystander, detached and impassible. He is God-with-us.”
Just how I described the Divine on radio yesterday; seems I’m now the orthodox one!
Many groups of women religious in U.S. criticizing Card. Dolan for his praise of Trump. Didn’t see any male religious saying anything, or did I miss something? Certainly haven’t heard anything from my own colleagues, the Redemptorists. Women with more courage.
