I need to start a conversation about this: What is the weirdest or coolest bug you have ever put in your purse, backpack, and/or, pocket? Any insect collector knows this is TOTALLY a thing. I'll share my story after I hear some of yours 🐜

@Fink_about_it This is a difficult one. I have a bug in my backpack almost everyday and I don’t even know what weird is anymore. Is this bug in a container inside a purse or pocket? or a just freely hanging out in a purse or pocket?

@JodyBugsMeUNL I've found myself in both situations... You know, when you want to collect something, especially for science, but don't have a vial or even small container for! I've made make-shift "envelopes" for butterflies out of dollar bills before and put them gently back in the wallet lol

@Fink_about_it Not sure. But my favorite story is about the resident who sent me a detailed drawing of an insect he had seen. Very specific characters he had seen.

@Fink_about_it I don’t usually put bugs in my purse but one time when I was walking I got so excited to see a stick insect that I forgot that they have defense mechanisms and had to walk half blind home for about a mile. Did not take that big home.

@Fink_about_it I put a vole in my shirt, apron-style. It peed on me but it was worth it. Does that count?

@vermillionBird Yes, totally counts. I put a field mouse in my winter coat pocket while snowboarding and zipped the pocket to keep it warm until I got to the bottom of the hill. It should have been hibernating instead of outside, so I took it in and cared for it.

@Fink_about_it @BlotchedEmerald I have discovered that snails can move surprisingly quick and are prone to wandering if left for any amount of time in open pockets.

@Fink_about_it I'm not a collector. But I was on a bike ride one time, still 15m from home, and dumped all the water out of my bottle so that I could pick up an eastern hercules beetle that was on the trail. To this day it out-of-habitat decorates the cactus I inherited from @davidgammel

@Fink_about_it Too many stories to pick one favorite. Live insects, especially of the stinging kind, are always a challenge.

@OSUCatOSU Oh yes. I've had a few 'accidents' with cool velvet ants escaping into my purse... lol

@Fink_about_it We were at dinner when my friend’s pocket started wriggling. He had put a rolled up pill millipede in there to photograph later and forgot about it!

@Fink_about_it Queen ant! Only weird because she crossed our path at a conference a few weeks ago, had to find a napkin and coffee cup to put her in during the poster session :D
