The double-life continues! Left: me two months ago in Costa Rica; Right: me two days ago during London Fashion Week. What do both photos have in common? Fancy black fabric but for two very different purposes 😂

Agree or Disagree? If you peer review enough for the same journal, they should waive publication fees when you publish. For example, if I reach 10 reviews they should grant me one free publication. Reviews can take a lot of time and we do it for free! Thoughts?
I made a reference to Ferris Bueller's Day Off in my Ecology Class off 55 students today. NONE OF THEM HAD SEEN IT OR KNEW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT the world is coming to an end I am now too old to be cool enough for my students.
Ladies and gentlemen yes I did get to wear a crown made of buprestid beetle elytra while walking for Icelandic designer Sigrun Bjork during London Fashion Week. Finally I have showcased real insects on the runway! 🐞 photo:Serguei Cherkassov w/

Fellow scientists & entomologists: have you been on a 1st date and out of reflex caught an insect/animal with your bare hand? This happened to me twice, once w/a mantis during a romantic walk in the park & last week (w/a fly) at a fine dining restaurant in Malibu. Can’t help it🤷🏻♀️
Let every little girl in the world know that you can be girly, get your hair and makeup done, walk the runway, and still be a scientist who loves bugs and be proud of it!

It is one of the coolest things to accomplish as a field biologist when you turn a butterfly you collected in the Amazon Rainforest, to this: annotated genes. 🦋-> 🧬

I need to start a conversation about this: What is the weirdest or coolest bug you have ever put in your purse, backpack, and/or, pocket? Any insect collector knows this is TOTALLY a thing. I'll share my story after I hear some of yours 🐜
You know you’re an

when... you grab the Altoid tin from your desk, put it in your purse, and later when you open it for a mint, you realize it is instead filled with envelopes containing dead insects (butterflies) 😂

Dressed accordingly as usual! My entomology-themed attire has its own section in my closet 🦋🪲 Sometimes I match my shirts to the content I’ll be lecturing in class that day. Nerdy? Maybe. Enthusiastic? Definitely.
Did you know that some butterflies can discriminate between more than one UV wavelength of light? And did you know that you can train them to do this (video)? Butterflies are so impressive! Our results released today w/

Say hello to your new *Assistant Professor* joining Pepperdine University in the fall! I am so thrilled about this opportunity, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the guidance from many mentors I have had including

As a grad student I was once asked, "How do you know anyone read your publications?" I replied: "Because they have been cited in other articles" and said person laughed at me. Since I finished my PhD, I now have 158 citations of my first-author papers. Proud moment.

Proud moment, and this doesn't happen every day in the research world: I submitted well-addressed manuscript revisions for my single-author paper to a journal this evening, and the editor got back to me 45 minutes later accepting my work for publication in the next issue! Hooray!
Last weekend I went to a fundraiser at Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s house in Beverly Hills and probably geeked out most about meeting

A few weeks ago I walked the runway during London Fashion Week, and just two days later I was back in the lab doing genomics work. Neither field is easy to be in, but the challenges in both make them fun and exciting!

After a fashion show, I love comparing my outfits to cool insects. Who wore it better? This bald-faced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata), or me donned in a fabulous outfit by designer Michael Lombard? I say it’s a tie! 🐝

FYI these are one-handed captures while the insect is in flight. Both times dates were impressed while I just sort of looked over and said “whoops. I didn’t mean to do that” but come on WHO JUST LETS A COOL BUG FLY IN FRONT OF THEMSELVES WITHOUT GETTING A CLOSER LOOK AT IT 🪲

Covid update: I have been recovering. Two weeks ago felt like hell. I was finally able to get a test 9 days after the onset of severe symptoms. My results were negative for covid19, but I am going to seek an antibody test to be sure. It was the most intense illness I’ve ever had.
So, today I submitted a manuscript for publication that I had been working on for quite some time. Afterwards I bought a pint of ice cream, ate all of it, then made just bacon (well turkey bacon) for dinner. Does anyone else do this to celebrate?

I am working on revisions for a single-author paper, and I did something risky by proposing a "way out there" theory that might explain my results. One reviewer said that by suggesting this theory, I'd be stirring up a lot of controversy. But isn't that what science is all about?
