After an animal is euthanised we usually make paw prints for the owner. This client had the paw prints incorporated into an amazing tattoo. He’s also an incredible dog owner. He adopts rescue dogs from some pretty unhappy lives and gives them a 10/10 life.

Our rabbits always get a treat when they come up to the edge of the enclosure. So Teddy, who has a very smooth brain, now demands treats from anything that comes up to the enclosure. Even Toby.

The dog’s are fine now but it was a strange case.

So what I would say is avoid really boutique food manufacturers - they often don’t have the experience and can inadvertently make food that is not balanced or has far too much of one nutrient. Go for big brands or carefully vary the diet across a few brands.

Went back to the food manufacturer and that particular food is made of lambs tracheas (windpipes). What sits over the windpipe? The thyroid gland. So they are making a food that is high in raw thyroid tissue and giving the dogs thyrotoxicosis (hyperthyroidism).

Dog doesn’t appear to have a thyroid tumour. After some discussion with the pathologist we asked what the dog was being fed - a boutique raw food diet. So we stopped that. All the symptoms went away, retest the thyroid and now it’s normal.

Had a weird case recently. Dog comes in with hair loss, agitated, eating more, weight loss. We do bloods. Dog has an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). This is super rare in dogs. I can’t remember diagnosing another case that wasn’t a dog getting an overdose of thyroid meds.

Tough news tonight. I think Toby is going through his bad boy phase and joined a motorcycle gang.

This puppy is doing really well now but it’s a rough start to your first week owning a puppy.

But it turns it the breeder hadn’t actually applied for free puppy insurance. I’ve seen this a few times so if the breeder tells you they’ve insured the puppy, double check. Plus free insurance normally has a really low limit so better to go for full plan immediately.

This week we had an 8 week old puppy with an intussusception - where one bit of bowel telescopes into another and gets trapped. We had to remove 10cm of small intestine 😢. Puppy was eating well the next day. The owners first dog and the breeder told them it had puppy insurance.

Toby had a proper groom yesterday. He also jumped up and stole a spicy chicken wing out of my hand when I answered a phone call. Don’t let that angelic face fool you. He’s a no good thief!

It’s someone’s one year old birthday, what an amazing year I’ve had with an angel of a dog. We love you Toby, happy birthday 🥳

Toby absolutely cannot beat Danni (The Red Menace) when it comes to tug of war games. Danni’s got a touch of the pit bull in her and she’s got neck and jaw strength for days. Yes Toby has been groomed and now has 4 chicken legs.

I have been off X for a bit. I love Americans but I’m not in love with American politics and it’s just all I get on X these days! Looking to get back into my animals and pet based echo chamber 😂. Any way. Toby is doing well. Giant and annoys his sister a lot.
