More Banned Book Week facts: What are the reasons for challenges. The word cloud shows the most common reasons given over 2021. Top reasons being: sexually explicit, LGBTQIA, critical race theory, profanity, woke and indoctrinating kids.

Attempts by a person (or persons) to remove or restrict books (or other materials) from a collection is considered a challenge. Banning is when a challenge is successful and the books (or other materials) are removed from the collection or access is some how restricted.
