Cole Palmer - CRY (H) 🔵. Palmer is a decent choice due to the home fixture, but do not underestimate Crystal Palace. They have put in very solid performances vs Man City and Liverpool, winning the FA Cup and Community Shield.

Erling Haaland - WOL (A) 🤖. A good fixture for Haaland who can compete with Salah here. Haaland has a good record vs Wolves and the is focal point of the City attack. There is much more reliance on him, whereas Salah has Wirtz/Etitike/Gakpo.

Captaincy 🧢. Mohamed Salah - BOU (H) 🔴. If you own Salah, I wouldn’t overcomplicate things. He is a brilliant captaincy choice who consistently does well on the opening day. A home fixture vs a BOU side with a new defence, it’s hard to look past Salah.

he will get 4 points for a clean sheet rather than 1. So, I would avoid picking midfielders with the aim of getting DEFCON points, as there is much better value in defenders that are good for DEFCON.

Therefore, I much prefer to go for a defender instead, even if this means playing a 4 at the back formation. Murillo and Anderson won’t differ too much in terms of attacking returns, but Murillo will likely do better for defensive contributions. Also, being the main point….

Midfielders have also been a target for DEFCON, with managers looking at the likes of Anderson, Caicedo and Baleba. These players will not get many attacking returns, so have a fairly low ceiling. Most of their ‘returns’ will be DC and clean sheet points.

Centre backs benefit from this mainly, due to the number of clearances that they make. Some team’s centre backs that benefit from DEFCON are Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Everton and more. Here are some great picks that do well for DEFCON 👇🏻.

DEFCON 🛡️. Defensive contributions are new to FPL and look like they will have a large impact. Strongly consider defenders that do well in this metric, like you do with defenders that do well in the attacking returns area.

The £5.0m price point ✅. Sanchez and Sels both play for solid defences that have a good fixture runs to start the season. Take your pick of one of these, perhaps basing it on what other players you have in your team.

Goalkeepers 🧤. There’s a real lack of goalkeepers this season, with the usual £4.5m price range being disappointing ❌. Kelleher - injury doubt.Petrovic - new club with a new defence.Verbruggen - tough fixtures.Areola - not nailed.Sa - tough fixtures. So, who do we go for?.

So, does this make him worth it?. The upside is definitely there, as Pedro and Chelsea are playing really well and have some great fixtures ahead. It depends on what your risk appetite is, as of course there is a lot of upside but potential for it to go quite badly.

is “not nailed”. By this, I mean that if he has a poor/quiet game and Delap comes off the bench and scores, all of a sudden there will be some question marks as to who starts the next game. As for Crystal Palace in GW1, Pedro will start.

Joao Pedro 🔵. £7.5m for Pedro looks like a decent price, but it’s not cheap enough to go with him without thought. ✅Fixtures.✅Good attack.✅In form.✅First choice. ❌Early subs.❌Not nailed.❌Takes up a Chelsea spot. The only one of these points that isn’t self explanatory….

This one feels a lot easier to choose. Palmer has a great run of fixtures to start the season, whereas Saka has a very tough run bar GW2. I would therefore start the season with Palmer, and look at Saka and other Arsenal assets in GW7 for their fixture turn.

Also, Palmer, Saka and Watkins have great rotation for captaincy, providing you with a good option every week. Saying that, I would still want to pick one of Salah/Haaland. As one of those and both Palmer/Saka is expensive, I’d now want to choose one of Palmer or Saka.

if one of them hits immense form. If you go for one of them and the other does well, the funds you get can from selling one can fund the other. So, having neither of them in your team is risky. However, it still can pay off. You can get a really well rounded team without them.
