Snow Lakers are heading back out of town today. The community is now under its second mandatory evacuation of the summer due to recent nearby fire activity.

It’s time. After a near month-long full evacuation and an ongoing struggle against a fire that threatened the entire area with destruction, people can now return to their homes in Flin Flon, Creighton, Denare Beach and nearby cabin areas.

A day after Flin Flon leaders announced re-entry would take place next Wednesday, Creighton and Denare Beach have followed suit. Their plan, announced Friday, will see people return three days before Flin Flon officially opens its doors.

The mandatory evacuation order for the City of Flin Flon may be lifted June 25 if the fire doesn't grow further.

As most Flin Flonners enter their fourth week evacuated from the north, information is trickling out the plan to get people home. There’s no confirmed date yet for the return, but how the City and various groups plan to do it is coming into focus.

Firefighting efforts are still ongoing near Flin Flon and Creighton. No structures have burned in either community as of Tuesday, but the fire is posing new and varied threats to the area, forcing firefighters to get creative.

It was go-home day for people in Cranberry Portage, Sherridon and Snow Lake Saturday - and cabinowners at two cottage areas will now be able to join them.

People from two northern communities will be able to head home Saturday morning. Flin Flon is not yet one of them, but a weekend full of rain could possibly help.

Flin Flon and Creighton are still intact Thursday and the nearby fire has been kept at bay. People evacuated from the region aren't likely to return this week, but small steps toward that are coming.

Cranberry Portage residents have received the thumbs-up to head back home this weekend.
