This race had no:
-Yellow flags
-Virtual Safety Cars
-Safety Cars
-Red Flags
-Retirements
-Errors during pits

In 2014 in Barcelona, Caterham’s F1 car was SLOWER than their GP2 car! 🤯
-1.30.3 for the F1
-1.29.8 for the GP2 (0.5s faster!)
#F1
cars became terribly slow in ‘14, and Caterham’s car was terrible. I explain this strange result in this thread! 👇
One BIG change Mercedes did that most missed - They moved the cockpit way forward!🤯
Scaling it through the known 3600mm wheelbase, we get a 230mm shift.
HAM weights ~75kg
Car+Driver: 798kg
Producing a 230mm/3600mm*(75kg/798kg) ~ 0.6% forward shift of the car centre of mass!🚀
The RedBull has unmatched aerodynamic efficiency and stability
There's been talking about RB10 using 'active' suspensions: this is not true, yet their 'secret' lies in their 'anti-dive' design🤔🧐
I've designed racecar suspensions in the past: my explanation in this thread🔧👇
Based on their telemetry, Brad Pitt’s car:
-Deployed 40000MJ, which is a measurable portion of the Hiroshima Bomb
-Used 14314 (litres?) of fuel in the last lap alone

Ferrari and Mercedes will improve in
#BahrainGP
; here is why 👇
🔵It's a medium downforce track: RB used a medium-df wing in the tests that suited the track
🔴Ferrari ran a lower df wing➡️Low grip and bad tyre wear!
🟢Mercedes used a high-load wing➡️ Terrible top speed!
#F1

I'm thrilled🔥
🟢There is no doubt that
@AstonMartinF1
built a gem... better than the RedBull in the braking zones while carrying a very similar rear wing!
ALO clocked a time 1.1s slower than PER, and most of the gap was due to the higher drag and lower downforce (look at the faster corners)
Ferrari vs Mercedes va RedBull floors
The plank wear pattern will be studied intensely by the other teams, as it tells you how the car changes its trim through the lap!
RB’s floor is the most intricate and tri-dimensional (as
@dr_obbs
mentioned)
#F1
#MonacoGP
No more hiding: we now have an idea of the strengths of the best 3 cars! 👀
🔵RB: Downforce, exit from the faster corners⏬
🔴Ferrari: low drag, possibly very good engine power🚀
🟢Aston: unmatched braking and mechanical grip (grip in the slower corners)🛞

Ferrari has cooked: in the race simulation, Sainz was 0.59s/lap quicker (on average) than Verstappen in last year's race!😳
RACE PACE
SF24: 96.87s
RB19: 97.46s (+0.59s)
SF23: 98.33s (+1.46s ‼️)
And his top speed was still 9km/h down vs last race➡️Turned-down PU🔥
#F1
The RB was on another planet on the Soft! 🤯
Great pace from the start... but the wear was half that of the rivals! No surprise they used two sets.
The pace was closer on the Hards, with higher wear for Ferrari than the others.
(All laptimes are fuel-corrected)

Throughout the weekend I told you:
-Ferrari was sandbagging the most (2nd best car with only one attempt with a damaged car!)
-The AM was quick, but not as RB and Ferrari: predicted 3rd car
-The Mercedes was 4th fastest
-The McLaren was struggling
I got them all right! 🤩🏆🤣

Mercedes went for 'revolution' rather than 'evolution'!💡
🟡Completely different sidepods inlets, even vs their mid-season update
🟣Much more inclined upper wishbone
🔴Different nose-wing attachment point
⚪️Wing looks very elaborate
Will they make this concept work?🤔
The W14 is here!🤩
Main differences: 👀
-Much shorter nose and endplates much closer to the nose tip - big changes!
-The 'zeropods' concept was confirmed, but the inlets have changed (they are now higher up)
-Different cooling outlets, floor and shark fin
#F1
@MercedesAMGF1
Aero properties!
-Slow cars on the left, quick cars on the right
-High-drag cars at the bottom, low-drag at the top
Therefore:
-Efficient Aero in top right
-High Downforce in bottom right
-Inefficient Aero in bottom left
-Low downforce in top left
Continues in next tweet👇
🤔Did PER crash on purpose in Monaco?
He either
-Crashed on purpose
-His foot slip on the throttle pedal
His throttle signal doesn't make sense: he went 100% throttle in just a couple tenths! This is ENTIRELY different from the previous lap AND all the prev. corners!
#Perez
#F1
Mercedes' front suspension redesign is significant too:
-The upper wishbone is now sloped downwards➡️Much higher anti-dive (the car will pitch more under braking, so it could be run lower!)
-Camber gain seems smaller than before➡️Better braking but worse low-speed understeer?🤔…
BREAKING: RedBull has introduced a 'Letterbox' sidepod inlet! (Upper picture)

Sainz was absolutely brilliant:
-Excellent pace when running in free air: quick+consistent
-Very aggressive (but clean) when attacking and defending
-Clever, too: he made PER overtake him BEFORE the DRS detection line to defend afterwards
Great Ferrari too
#F1
#AustrianGP
My impressions of the cars so far:
-The RB is an extremely balanced car: the RB18 was improved in every aspect!
-Ferrari is ‘sandbagging’ MORE than the RB: lower acceleration on the straights➡️Lower PU mode!
-AM built a real beast
-Mercedes's struggles are real
#F1
#BahrainGP
The 'new' Mercedes W14 is here!👀
Huge philosophy change: from minimal sidepod to large sidepods with big undercut
The large sidepods could help in managing the airflow over the rear tyres, while the undercut allows the flow to reach the rear (like the beam wings)
#F1
#MonacoGP
Why did Mercedes revert to black?
Because they aggressively removed paint to save mass! 💥
Only the area in yellow is painted! The rest of the car is exposed carbon fiber 🔥
The black paint masks it very well!
👀Could the car still be overweight? This livery surely helps!
#F1
🗒️Thoughts on
#BahrainGP
!
-Absolutely dominant RB
-Ferrari clear 2nd, but disastrous reliability
-AM>Merc thanks to great downforce➡️Good wear
-Alfa and Williams way better than in Q: BOT best of the rest and ALB in the points. Opposite of Haas
-McL and Alpine were comical

Why do these sidepods look so 'basic'?🤔
Wolff: "It's a lack of comprehension of what it is that makes this car such a nasty piece of work"

📉I will do a deep dive into data in the next few days, but what I saw so far concerning the W14, in the telemetries and the videos, doesn’t bode well for Mercedes at all
📊Ferrari, on the other hand, is doing extreme setup tests that they could learn a lot from

🧐This shot reveals the uniqueness of the W14's Halo!
Instead of simply mounting onto the chassis, the Halo sides prolong towards the back, producing two 'sausages' never seen before! (next pic)
Audacious for a team that struggled to understand the W13! 🤩
🤔Will it work?

VER's overtake on HAM showed how powerful was the combination of
1)RB's low drag
2)RB's DRS effectiveness (and DRS in general)
3)The tow
HAM reached 298km/h; meanwhile VER had a 322km/h speed
HAM's engine started clipping down to 289km/h📉, while VER's speed grew to 325km/h!📈
I used ALL the laps from the second day of tests to estimate the DRS effectiveness for each team
When opening the DRS, the drag reduction was:
-17% for Ferrari(due to the small upper plane)
-17.5% for Merc (despite the draggy rear wing!)
-20.6% for RB: a big advantage!
#F1
👀2023 vs 2022 difference in best laptime:
AM -2.4s (!!)
Williams -1.2s
RB -1.0s
Merc -0.7s
Haas -0.7s
Ferrari -0.6s
Alpine -0.6s
McL -0.6s
AT -0.2s
Alfa -0.1s
Average for engine manufacturer
Mercedes -1.2s
HONDA -0.6s
Mercedes -0.6s
Ferrari -0.4s

🟢Alonso's Aston was quick today! The car was excellent in the first braking zone, in the twisty sections and on the last straight
🔴The Ferrari dominated the straights! But the RB was indeed down on power
🔵VER was fastest in only 17.9% of the lap... but got the best time!

cars have around 6kg of paint (according to Alfa Romeo team manager Beat Zehnder)
So the maximum theoretical mass gain is 6kg, or around 0.18s/lap (considering a 0.3s/lap weight sensitivity) if the car still ends up over the minimum mass
A 3kg gain would bring around 0.1s!
The SF 23 is deeply innovative under the surface... it is the only car to implement an S-Duct!!!
The high-pressure energy flows through the low-placed intake (in blue) and re-emerges over the sidepod
This provides high-energy flow to the rear, maximising downforce!
#F1
On pure pace, the 2014 Mercedes W05 was FAR more dominant than the RB19!
Bahrain, SC restart: HAM on hards pulled a 7.1s gap to PER in 2 laps... while battling with ROS!
-Excellent chassis/aero
-Godly engine (7 Mercedes engines in top 9), despite de-tuning to hide performance!
Alonso's engineer told him that his rear tyres were getting colder
This happens when a circuit
-is rear-limited
-stresses the tyres through mechanical wear and not thermal degradation
It was the same in Australia, where Ferrari was strong as well!
#F1
#AzerbaijanGP
#F12023
🗒️Thoughts on
#AustrianGP
-Ferrari confirms to have solved their tyre wear issues and is now looking a solid 2nd best: quick and consistent
-The updated McL is mighty and could fight with Mercedes and Aston in the next races!
-SAI drove brilliantly
What is YOUR take?💭
#F1
🧐This is interesting:
-Ferrari will run the (hopefully stiffened!) single-pylon rear wing, which is slightly more loaded than the wing they ran in Bahrain
-However, Saudi Arabia is a track where teams run LESS loaded wings
This tells how suboptimal their setup was in Bahrain!
💡The RB20 is NOT invincible (in qualifying):
Leclerc's Q2 lap would have given him pole, and his braking and slow-speed cornering were better!
VER gained on the main straight thanks to a tow (in green) and in the subsequent corner
Then, Leclerc steadily recovered over 0.3s!
#F1

FRONT WINGS
💡Mercedes might have found a loophole!
By not structurally attaching the uppermost element to the nose, they might recreate the infamous 'Y250' vortex, which improves underbody efficiency👌
I can definitely see the other teams to get noisy about this🤬
#F1
Leclerc’s last year’s pole (1.11.376) was FASTER than this year’s lap (1.11.471)
The lap he did with the old F1-75 would have placed him on the front row today, in front of Alonso (1.11.449)
#F1
#monacogp
Considering the terrible starting position, this was Ferrari’s best race this year so far, in my opinion
The team studied the telemetry from Spain and said that they got a good understanding of the updated package
It looks like a solid base to build on: let’s hope for further…
💡Ferrari might start the weekend on the backfoot:
They opened all the cooling outlets+brake ducts to the maximum➡️This will reduce the car's efficiency (less downforce, more drag)📉
Either the other teams will follow suit, or Ferrari has worse cooling requirements
Opinions?🤔…
Interesting rear wing choices 👀
RB: high load
Merc/Alpine: medium-high load
Ferrari: medium load
Ferrari should be quicker than RB in the DRS OFF zones, but RB’s superior efficiency and DRS effectiveness should make it close once DRS activates
Beware of wear!🛞
📸…
Is the RB19 'a dominant car'?
>Surely: 4 wins and 7 podiums in just 4 races!🏆
Is it 'the most dominant F1 car I've seen'? (As HAM said)
>Surely not: in the V6 era, many Mercedes cars he drove (e.g. '14/16/20) were more dominant!📊
Yet, RB's advantage is impressive
#F1
#F12023
🚨The DRS was NOT working in Q3 for both Astons!
ALO did a mega job staying close to HAM, as the DRS is crucial here! The 326km/h top speed was not bad at all with the closed DRS💪
The RB was a missile, and Merc faster than Ferrari
McLaren is still a brick...but a quick one!🧱
This weekend will have the world’s first… FAKE gravel trap 🤯
It is completely solid, made from resin: it will offer reduced grip, but also prevent gravel to be pulled onto the racing line!
What do you think: top or flop? 🤔

Verstappen has been overperforming Perez all season long...
In Las Vegas, he kept an 11km/h higher cornering speed in the fastest corner despite running a less loaded wing!🤯
The lower drag paid dividends concerning top speed:
+3km/h with DRS
+4km/h without DRS
#F1
#LasVegasGP
This year, the Australian GP will feature FOUR DRS zones!🤯
During the Jeddah GP, the effect of tow+DRS in terms of drag reduction was:
-20.7% for Aston📉
-23.8% Mercedes
-28.3%Ferrari
-31.5% for RedBull📈
This change should make RB even stronger and could hold back Aston🤔

Not the type of 'F1 Data Analysis' you would expect but... still data linked to an F1 race!
The point evidenced is the instant of the race start: once the race pace materialised, the value for Aston Martin soared! +38% in 5 days, +19% during the race alone📈
ALO needs a bonus!
💡Did Perez expose the updated RedBull floor?
📄FIA documents attest that RB 'Revised a floor edge detail' and 'the changes have extracted some more local load' (translated: more downforce)
One change might be the one in green.
What do you think?🤔
