We're really excited to be joining the first (internal) day of the @SHEAR_Programme #commonground event today. Up first we're thinking about our 'Sparkling Moments' from the last few years.

Through the @SHEAR_Programme researchers and practitioners are working together to support decision making informed by science. We made a short video showing how this has helped increase resilience to natural hazards https://t.co/yT0HrQkyEu. There are some excellent examples ⬇️

"The Evidence Base on Early Action", by @FATHUM_NERC team members Tobias Pforr (@UniofReading) and @emilycwilkinson (@ODIdev). Funded as part of the @SHEAR_Programme.
Climate extremes continue to hit during the #COVID19 crisis. To minimize the impacts on food systems and people we must act early based on forecasts. WFP & @ODIdev stress the need for capturing the benefits of #EarlyAction in this latest report.⬇️ @EarlyActionREAP @GermanyDiplo

GloFAS has early forecasts of flooding, ~6 May. @liz_stephens, do the @FATHUM_NERC results show good skill here? In the future, a @UgandaRedCross FbF protocol will help support greater early action on such forecasts, of course carefully adapted during a pandemic. @IreneAmuron
East Africa is facing a "triple crisis" of #Covid19, #locusts and #floods. In Western #Uganda, Kasese district was hit by flash floods after days of heavy rain, which caused major rivers to burst their banks. Red Cross teams have distributed relief items to affected people.

@liz_stephens @dnonyodi @RCClimate @globalfloods_eu @ECMWF @UniRdg_water @CopernicusEMS @FATHUM_NERC @SHEAR_Programme Really useful blog Liz. This case emphasises the importance of understanding and improving those parts of the forecasting chain that are shown to have the most influence on the predictability of TC-related flooding, which is what I'm hoping I can help with through my PhD work.
