DTL, iconic digital-type pioneer and *proudly independent* high-quality foundry since 1990, entered the computer-font market in the industry’s very first decade.

In 2020 we’ll celebrate 30 years of font production for professionals by professionals: including work by Matthew Carter, Hanna Hakala, Nikola Djurek, Michael Harvey, Johann Michael Fleischmann, Jan van Krimpen, Lukas Schneider, Gerard Unger and Frank E. Blokland –to name a few…

The latest version of https://t.co/UTx1OddbRh is a bit faster and looks cleaner. It also includes stronger Unicode obfuscation: code points of roughly 400 characters have been scrambled across ranges used by the displayed fonts. This makes full reconstruction considerably harder.

In FontEnigma, the served woff2 files are now XOR-encrypted, and decrypted on the fly in the browser. The fonts are then loaded using FontFace and referenced via temporary ‘blob:’ URLs, which expire immediately (and thus change when the page is refreshed). https://t.co/GMcnhMIS92

For protection, FontEnigma (in development) uses obfuscated fonts. Text appears scrambled outside the site, making the fonts useless when downloaded. Now, pasted text is obfuscated on the fly and copied/cut text is decoded to match what was initially typed. https://t.co/UTx1OddbRh

It was a fun and productive information session this afternoon. The diagram, by the way, comes from this recent discussion on the TypeDrawers forum:

We have ten confirmed registrations and several pending for the OTF Course. The group is diverse, including two participants with a master’s in type. An informal extra info session is scheduled this afternoon at 3 PM Amsterdam time. For a link, contact otf[at]lettermodel[dot]org.

Manual digitization in IKARUS format is excellent for capturing subtle details. However, converting to cubic Bézier often introduces some redundant contour points, especially in flat curve segments. Over the past few years, we have cleaned up thousands of glyphs to optimize them.

A week ago we had a nice online OTF-Course https://t.co/WADrbCt0sD info session. We now have a group of nine students for the 2025–26 edition, and at least one more commitment –a good start. For those who have never seen Jürgen speak about font technology: https://t.co/YTyFboQbzf

The display of stem and curve thickness has been available in the IKARUS system for decades. This functionality was carried over into the DTL font editors quite some time ago. In addition, we use a batch checker to trace unexpected thickness deviations: the Font Statistics Tool.

There is growing interest in the OTF Course, as evidenced by the registrations. The course promotes a pattern-forming approach to type design: not to merely echo historical practices, but to offer a hands-on method for designing typefaces today. More info: https://t.co/egb1VsUYi1

Due to the remarkable interest in the OTF Course ( https://t.co/WADrbCtyib) we have simplified the payment process with a special course boutique. Perhaps a small detail but one that fits the essence of the type design, where no detail is ever really small. https://t.co/lEpt9mKnay

FontEnigma is a type tester under development at DTL. To protect the online font data, it uses scrambled Unicode code points in OT fonts that are decoded on the fly. Outside of the tester, these fonts are useless. Retail fonts are, of course, not affected. https://t.co/UTx1OddbRh

With five months still to go before enrollment closes, we are excited to share that the minimum number of students has already been exceeded. This means that the new Origin of Type Frameworks (OTF) course will officially start this fall. Thanks to everyone who made this possible!

it is entirely logical to approach archetypal patterning not just as a historical exercise, but as a viable method for developing contemporary typefaces. This idea forms the core of the new Origin of Type Frameworks (OTF) course. The related press release: https://t.co/ybvs2WmvHe

A photo of a bus shelter poster taken by Dutch type designer Albert-Jan Pool yesterday in Hamburg, Germany. Botschaft der Wildtiere uses DTL Caspari for their entire corporate identity, including their website https://t.co/7dUxrkela5. A nice use of this characteristic sans serif.

Last Sunday Torinoumi-san of Jiayu-Kobo appeared in Jounetsu Tairiku (情熱大陸) on Japanese TV channel MBS. In the program, he edited a typeface on his computer using a font tool that we at DTL are quite familiar with. The video –for those who have access: https://t.co/JetRtWfipd

After teaching for 30 years at the Plantin Institute of Typography, Frank will retire from Antwerp this summer. Jeremy Tankard will now take over the EcTd course. However, the original opinionated focus on pattern formation will continue in a new program: https://t.co/FQDl6KVlTx
