Small improvement to the Earth Engine catalog: each dataset now belongs to at least one category. Their names were mostly taken from the NASA GCMD keyword list.

The agent comes with an example task that you can start with: "Find something interesting about a local CSV file with airport information". Sample output screenshot is below (but each run is different!).

It already has clients for Gemini, ChatGPT, Anthropic Claude, and DeepSeek configured - you just need to provide an API key as a Colab secret. (More detailed instructions are in the notebook.).

What's so special about it? It writes and saves its own functions, then runs them in Colab. Then it writes higher-level functions using functions it wrote earlier, and so on - until your task is solved.

And while I'm not quite ready to share an EE-enabled Functionsmith (soon!), here's its younger but more versatile sibling. Meet general-purpose Functionsmith:

Last year, I open-sourced EE Genie (, a simple notebook that writes EE code, fetches EE tiles, and analyzes them. But it's not too sophisticated and will get easily confused if it needs to do something complex.

It has no access to your local files. In short, it's a sandbox. Incidentally, Earth Engine is very easy to use from Colab. Yes, you probably guessed where I'm going with this. I've been experimenting with agents that automatically write EE code to solve simple tasks.

I'm sure the industry will figure out a more secure answer eventually, but here's a temporary answer. Colab. Colab will generally prompt you if code running within it tries to access any resources requiring authentication, like your Drive documents.
