There is a bookstore on the Danforth called The Scribe, and on Saturday, closed for stocktaking, they left piles of books outside. I found this issue of the Southern Review from 1975, featuring a poem by one Michael Schmidt.

Cavafy’s exquisite antiquarian immediacy gets me every time. I love @EvanPJones’ translation for Carcanet. Do not sleep on Cavafy— a poet whose style Said notes was late early, whose risks are timely in their timeless referents.

I am a great fan of Satyajit Ray’s ‘Charulata’ (1964) and the story it’s based on — Tagore’s ‘The Broken Nest’ — is so much more. Funny and charming where the film is mysterious.
