Fun fact: most of the text/log files in Steam use a file format specifically for Source (2?). They could've just used .txt, but someone at Valve wanted to be quirky.
In preparation for CS2 it's a good time to call out that we have a Source 2 asset/resource viewer and decompiler.
S2 is complicated and we would love to have more people to help out with development.

If file has specific structure, then new extension is not being quirky. The file doesn't need to be binary in order to get different extension.
