Twelve years ago I tweeted this (notably, at 2am). When I wrote it, I had a full time job as a Web Developer at a church, Iβd been doing freelance work with @BillSKenney , and I had no timeline in mind of when Focus Lab might become a full time reality.
One of these days I'll say goodbye to having 2 jobs and ~4 hours of sleep a night. That's not today though. Nor tomorrow. And that's okay.

Definitely didnβt expect Dr. West to run for President!. Iβd love to see him in the conversations and debates. His commitment to dignifying everyone, especially when he disagrees vehemently with them, would be a welcomed ingredient to the political scene.

Saw my first musical on Broadway tonight. We saw @NYNYbway and daaaaaang it was so good. Talk about an incredible first show to see. Next up: Hamilton on Friday for our anniversary show.

My wife and Iβs first trip to NYC together as we celebrate our anniversary. π. We wanted to come last year this week but she tested positive for covid the night before. So weβve been looking forward to this for a while. Stoked to finally be here!

These days, Focus Lab isn't a full-service anything. We don't write code. We don't produce videos. We don't dabble in marketing. We don't do lots of thingsβon purpose. We're "just" an incredible B2B branding agency. β€οΈ.

I was reminded of this while scrolling through our portfolio yesterday. I was revisiting our work with Real Thread. Their CEO, Dru, said something that spoke to the simplification of our services (even if he wasn't aware of the things we'd removed).

But the truth was that I was STOKED about the decision. Not because I was tired of writing code. I knew that our decision to go all in on branding was going to be best for our company and would result in outstanding results for clients.

Many of my dev friends checked in on me. "Are you okay with all that?" and "So, how do you really feel about that move?" were the types of questions I was asked.

When we started Focus Lab, I was writing code basically all day for clients. As our team and business evolved, we eventually decided to stop offering development as a service. The primary thing I was doing for clients was going away from our business model.
