Perfectionism. Before: I’d overpolish every output. After: I ask for “good enough” vs. “perfect.” Gives me perspective so I don’t waste time chasing polish.

Bias checks. Before: I worried AI would constantly call out every bias. After: I ask it to flag them only when clearly relevant (like when I’m about to start 3 new projects at once).

Search. Before: I’d let AI hand me the same 10 Google results anyone could find. Surface-level. After: I ask it to “skip the top results and check forums, transcripts, or niche blogs.” That’s how I get actual signal instead of garbage. It feels like having a research.

Keywords. Before: I didn’t think trigger words mattered. After: Now I say “step back,” “bias check,” or “systematize” to change its mode fast. Small words, big difference.

Emails. Before: I’d spend 15 minutes rewriting an email 3 times so it looked perfect. That worked when I was in insurance sales — but now it kills my time. After: Now I use 3 lanes: . 1. Founder Mode (one-liner, done).2. High-Value (clean but quick).3. Internal (raw, straight to.

Hedging. Before: My prompts were: “do it this way, or maybe that way, or both.”. After: I set one clear job: “brainstorm only” or “write only.” AI is sharper when I am.

One-shot answers. Before: I wanted the “perfect” answer in one go. After: I use rounds: .1. explore .2. refine .3. polish. It feels like working with a teammate, not a vending machine.

Mixing strategy + writing. Before: I’d often ask AI to brainstorm and also write the polished draft. at the same time. It always came back messy. After: Now I split it. First I ask for angles. Then I ask for the draft. Cleaner in = cleaner out.

I use AI every day. But I realized a lot of my prompts weren’t great. I was wasting time, overexplaining, or asking for too much at once. Here are 8 ways I’ve improved my prompting (with before/after examples). Maybe one helps you. 👇.
