I had the pleasure of working with Brooke at Pluralsight. If you're looking for a solid programmer or SRE, Brooke is absolutely someone you want to hire.

My whole team was laid off this morning. If anybody needs a senior/staff level SRE or programmer, I'm all ears.

If you learn history, and it doesn't make you uncomfortable, you didn't learn history, you learned about a fantasy world that never existed.

Qualified Immunity is a mistake, political immunity is a mistake, anything that makes a person in a position of authority be held at a lower standard of law is a mistake. People in a positions of authority should be held at a much higher and stricter standard.

Overheard someone ending their argument with, "That's a fact in my opinion" *Eye spasms* that's not how facts work. Facts are reality. Opinions are personal beliefs which are not necessarily based on reality. Facts can inform opinions, but are otherwise mutually exclusive.

Not so hot take... If a company gives me a job offer, I accept it, they should not be able to rescind it without paying at least 3 months salary. The only exception when employees lie / misrepresent themselves. This offer then rescind thing is WAY too damaging to be allowed.

Simple fact, if your employer doesn't give you a raise that exceeds the rate of inflation, your pay was cut. If your employer didn't give you a raise in a year they saw an increase in profits part of those profits were specifically funded by your cut pay.

There's no such thing as an "over educated woman" There are just educated women. Over implies, too much education is a thing that can happen. Being too knowledgeable makes about as much sense as being too healthy. There's no such thing.

The whole point of striking is that it causes a disruption that can't be ignored to force your demands. This is true of most successful protests as well. The civil rights movement found its successes because it was disruptive so couldn't just be ignored.

Every hour worked should result in accruing paid time off. Part time, full time, salary, hourly, contract, etc I don't care. If companies can't afford that, those companies are fundamentally flawed and should fail. If a company can't pay a living wage, it should fail.

Mastodon has just passed over 2 million active monthly users, a new record! People are voting with their feet. The future of social media doesn't have to belong to a billionaire, it can be in the hands of its users.

A quick reminder as folks are glorifying absurd hours again: 1. Sustained crunch mode leads to net negative productivity vs. 40 hr/wk 2. Working sleep deprived leaves you as mentally impaired as being drunk Working longer *feels* productive but it makes you worse at your job.

Twitter is fine now, but as the database grows, new security vulnerabilities are discovered, and minor issues get worse. There simply won't be enough people to keep up as things start to break down making the website all but unusable.

For all those "but it's still working" people. Think of Twitter like a bridge. When you fire civil engineers the bridge doesn't spontaneously combust. It slowly wears out, cracks form, no repairs happen due to no engineers. Then it catastrophically fails. Software is the same.

It's painful to see what's happening to all the talented folks who are/we're at Twitter. It's also a reason I genuinely believe everyone should unionize. Things are good, until they aren't, you need to be ready for when they aren't.

*slow claps* Ah I see you've deployed one of the most extreme toxic company cultures, how's that working out? Also you should unionize, note you in this case isn't regarding the context here, I mean, you, person reading this, unrelated to these events, should unionize.

NEW: Twitter just alerted employees that effective immediately, all office buildings are temporarily closed and badge access is suspended. No details given as to why.
