A local family, whose 11-year-old daughter Lily Rose is nearing the end of a 7-year battle with cancer, is appealing for prayer for 'sweet and happy dreams,' Lily's goodnight wish. Please spare a thought tonight for Lily and her unbelievably brave family.
At age 7, Zenyatta just missed closing out a perfect career in defense of her title in the Classic. At age 7, Winx makes history with a 4th Cox Plate. Over their last 49 starts, they are 48-1. Both daughters of Street Cry, quite a feat.
Mind Your Biscuits, by the end of the weekend (assuming no scratch), will have had runners in the UAE Derby, the Kentucky Derby and Japanese Derby in the same year.
One of the best things about the 2 Japanese winners is that both had suitable options at home, yet connections took a sporting chance. You can't win if you don't play, it was a bold move to send them across and it paid off handsomely.
Those who have watched Japanese horses train up to big races know that this is absolutely normal. Lob along for three or more furlongs and let them finish up and gallop out. This technique has been something other than flawed, so questioning it seems silly.
My soon-to-be 17-year-old has worked hard for the last two years and disciplined herself to accumulate enough savings to buy her first car. Proud of her beyond words.
Wayne Lukas beat a horse trained by

rode a jock represented by

US Freshman Sires By Worldwide Winners
Constitution 29
Tapiture 27
American Pharoah 26
Competitive Edge 26
Wicked Strong 25
Bayern 23
Khozan 20
Can't remember a crop where this many had north of 20 winners.
I mean, Arrogate didn't sire a Derby winner, can we stop with this adulation? <ducks>
Oaks, Preakness, Belmont, Travers. Grade I winners 7f to 12f. Seize the Grey his sixth elite-level scorer, two of whom can carry on his legacy at stud here and maybe one overseas.
Tremendous.
Magic Wand's season:
Gulfstream-->Meydan-->Belmont-->Ascot-->Curragh-->Ascot-->Arlington-->Leopardstown-->Moonee Valley-->Flemington. G1s all bar the Wolferton.
Yep, she deserved one of these.
Racing is my livelihood, pays the bills, I'm a lifer. But it ain't easy to endure one kick in the ass after the next and be remotely optimistic about the future.
And now we enter that magical space where every Derby and Oaks horse is training out of their skin and looks a million bucks and insert your favorite phrase here. Can't wait.
Nobals earned a 102 for the Turf Sprint, Big Evs an 85 for the Juvenile Turf Sprint. The difference in the raw time was 0.16 seconds.
:21.15, :43.77, :55.15 Turf Sprint
:20.71, :43.65, :55.31 JTS
I am really baffled by this.
One of the great honors I've had in my time at the paper was doing this trip down memory lane with Arthur Hancock on the 20th anniversary of FuPeg's Derby. Worth a re-read
Knock him and his accomplishments if you must, but Justify's path to superstardom is something we are unlikely to ever see repeated. Appreciate what he did and how he did it.
Justify now up to 6 G1/GISWs, all this year:
Arabian Lion--June 10
Aspen Grove--July 8
Opera Singer--Oct. 1
Just F Y I--Oct. 7
City of Troy--Oct. 14
Hard to Justify--Nov. 3
Out of this world.
10yo Gordon Lord Byron has been declared for the 91st start of a glorious career in Saturday's EJC Million (1400m) in Prague, drawn 15 with Tadhg O'Shea named to ride for Tom Hogan. Velka Chuchle will be the 27th different track for the legend.
Full marks to Kazushi Kimura for getting up there and delivering an acceptance speech in English. He could have had a translator, but he soldiered through it. Having studied language in college, I know how hard it is to do what he did.
Today marks 25 years at the paper, just hope against hope I can keep on keeping on. Thanks to
@barryweisbord
&
@suefinley
who hired an inexperienced Chicago kid who didn't (& still doesn't) know much. Thanks to those of you who follow my stream of consciousness. It's appreciated.
Labor Day will mark 24 years for me at the TDN. The Servis/Navarro day was something else, but I can't remember an edition in all my years like Friday's.
Today marks 22 years on the job
@theTDN
, am forever grateful for the opportunity I was given by
@barryweisbord
and
@suefinley
. I'm a whole lot older, grayer and smarter than I was on September 8, 1998. Been a hell of a ride.
I am usually not coherent enough to pen 2k words on anything, so my

for his time and wishing him and

best of luck this weekend

In no way am I committed to Forte, but I'm wondering exactly what else he was supposed to do yesterday. Terrible draw, wide trip, beat to the punch by his chief rival (forget the others), ran him down when doing his best work through the line. Massive effort, ignore the fig.
So, looks like Jack C. isn't a Classic-type horse. Remember, horses like Tale of the Cat and More Than Ready and Forestry and Munnings himself couldn't win the Haskell, but went on to become important sires. Not the end of the world. Still a massively talented animal.
I put some thoughts down on paper as regards the pending closure of one of the most beautiful racing venues anywhere. Day ended on a sour note, but still a very important part of my life deserves a send-off
I am an unabashed Richard Mandella fan, so no bets, but a very satisfying result and how cool to see the Pin Oak silks still being carried to wins in races like this? Mage ran superbly as well. Record-setting 4th Haskell for Mike Smith (Holy Bull, Coronado's Quest, Authentic).
"I find it terribly sad that there isn't already a strong offer from a leading Flat stud to stand this horse."

For A Shin Hikari fans, this will bring tears:
2yo filly REFRAME 🇺🇸(American Pharoah x Careless Jewel (Tapit)) won the 1600m (Turf) 2yo Newcomers at Niigata.
She was uncontrollable for most of the race. You won't forget her! A freak is born.

Yeah, the Into Mischiefs and Curlins and Arrogates of the world sire Oaks winners, but then you have stallions like Fast Anna and Alternation and Tapizar and Majestic Warrior and Proud Citizen and Pollard's Vision in the not-too-distant past.
Big thanks to
@toshionikubo
for taking the time to join the gang on this week's

Writers' Room pod. Toshi and

are outstanding sources for Japanese racing info and you should be following both accounts if you aren't already.
Epicenter ran back to his Preakness Beyer of 102 in Saturday's Jim Dandy, while Zandon earned a career best 100 after being asked to sit handy. Travers going to be epic.
Full report of the Japan Cup now up

. Generational talent is Equinox, what a run for him. First horse in Japanese racing history to make over 2b yen.
What a good, solid racehorse sire Flatter was. 59 stakes winners and 21 graded winners worldwide, including 5 Grade I winners. Leaves behind the promising young stallions Upstart and West Coast to carry on his legacy.
Quality Road's stats are really astronomical. His ratio of SW to winners is 12.5% (1 out of 8) and 8.6% GSW to overall winners. He is 73.7% winners to starters. Those are lofty numbers.
The Preakness result was like stepping outside to find cool and dry conditions after days of oppressive heat and humidity. For a few minutes, everything in the world of racing seems OK.
Bob Baffert told the
@theTDN
podcast today that Nadal stands 16.3 and tips the scale at 1300 pounds. Amazing agility for a big horse. Look for the Baffert interview in the next podcast.

No disrespect to the Browns and Coxes and McPeeks and Wards of the world, but love seeing names like Lobo and Gutierrez and Pessin among the graded-winning trainers on

Utterly remarkable, watching it again, that Midnight Bourbon (someone can correct me, but I think he's in excess of 16h) was athletic enough to pop right up from that.
War Like Goddess heads a list of six American-based horses entered for next month's G1 Japan Cup. Also includes Gufo, Cabo Spirit, Master Piece (Chi), Highland Chief and....Hot Rod Charlie.
California Chrome was represented by his first winner when Sunkar Time (2c x Kiosk, by Left Banker) scored on debut Saturday at Krasnodar. He is a half-brother to multiple OH-bred SW Needmore Flattery.
Bellucci, a half-sister to GISW Salty, became the 100th worldwide individual winner for

Freshman sire Mitole was represented by his first winner Tuesday when Mit Myth won his maiden at first asking at Nal'chik in Southern Russia

Enable's winning time of 2:28 and some change was the 'fastest' of her 3 KG's. She won in 2:36.22 in 2017 and 2:32.42 last year. Despite the rain, the official going at Ascot was gd/fm.
Pharoah and Justify have spoiled racing fans. But as
@HorseToWatch
commented, horses can drop a race or two and still remain at the head of the class. Nothing lost in defeat today.
We lost our first family pet today. Zoey was cantankerous and wanted to be petted just so. She was an outdoor animal, so we would be the lucky recipient of 'gifts' on the driveway floor. Cats will be cats, I guess. She was thoroughly loved, anti-social as she could be...
Seems the right time to repeat that owners have zero obligation to racing fans. Their horses are valuable assets and far be it from me to tell anyone how to manage them. It's a bold move that deserves admiration.
