What makes fireflies light up? Bioluminescence. @WSUEntomology has a cool explainer of the science of how & why these insects glow, thanks to @AskDrUniverse. #GoCougs
askdruniverse.wsu.edu
A firefly glows because of a chemical reaction that happens when oxygen enters the light organ in its abdomen. It glows to find mates and avoid predators.
