it was funny seeing paragraph after paragraph about phainon’s writing being a slow build from 3.0 to 3.4 under some random fb post that didn’t even bring him up, but these bros think Deeply when it’s called for

the way i’m seeing thinkpieces from waifubros about characterization maybe there’s still hope for this fandom

the irony of Phainon being programmed to be the embodiment of hate yet having so much love for the people he cares about and Elysia being a herrscher of humanity like you guys think im joking but im being deadass that is her carbon copy

i think viewing his obsession as insanity is… only halfway there, bc it’s etched into his soul and remains long after his mind and body have corroded. and examining it in an alternate setting might call for “would he ever experience a feeling as dire as killing a loved one?”

and there was also the added context of his loved ones unknowingly fasttracking the end of the world and destroying their own future. he killed them with the knowledge that they were dooming themselves and the regret that there was no other way to prevent it

and him spending a full lifetime developing love and attachments to the world each cycle compounded his grief, as he carried not just the truths, beliefs, falsehoods, wishes and hopes with him but also all the emotional weight that came with being a part of the world

the guilt accumulated from him being unable to stop the flamechase, and then being unable to get his comrades to listen, as he exhausted his will to explain his actions and then his mind deteriorated. it was also from bearing the truths alone

the very first action that he took for the eternal recurrence was killing a loved one. he entered the cycles with grief, guilt, and a promise as his mental foundation. and it got worse as he had to remember and bear every lifetime into the next cycle

alright now i’m gonna examine phainon’s obsession through the sequences of events that led to it, bc his type of karmic obsession is one that normally happens due to very impactful, life-lasting causes

and evernight has found her resolution, as march wishes to remember her and liberate her from bearing the burden alone. that leaves phainon and how the world will respond to his obsession

and thus there’s his parallel to evernight: being ok with being forgotten as long as they get to keep remembering in others’ stead. to them the act of remembrance is their duty, the weight of the world, what they cling to even as they let others go

whether he’s predisposed to obsession, tbh i can’t tell and that’s not what his character arc is about. the way i see it, his obsession is rather the consequence of keeping the cycles going /and/ remembering all of them

it’s no longer a form of obsession that a living brain can fathom. this is the kind that creates ghosts and hauntings, the kind that manifests as punishments for sinners in hell. it’s not glorious or pitiful or romantic, it’s meant to horrify
