Read John Burnside’s The Dumb House this week: a dark and twisted book that brought me as close to Iain Banks’ 40 year old The Wasp Factory as I’m like to get in Scottish fiction. Don’t know how this escaped my attention until now - a modern Scottish classic.

It was really fantastic to be able to contribute a chapter to this volume. I’m now really eager to get stuck in to reading and using this book to support the teaching of different and new Scottish texts in the classroom.

That’s John Byrne away. Slabs is one of my favourite plays of all time and Byrne was a totally underrated genius. Going to fashion a duck’s arse hairdo, listen to Terry Dean, and watch Rebel Without a cause in homage. 🥲
